As an architect specializing in laboratory planning and design, I have a passion for creating environments that enable scientists, researchers. and healthcare professionals to do their best work. My role is to understand the science behind the space-how people work, how equipment and processes interact, and what is needed to create a safe, efficient, and adaptable laboratory environment.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to plan and design a wide range of specialized facilities, including biomedical research laboratories, pathology, cytology, histology, autopsy and grossing facilities. and vivaria. I have led the planning and design of a new pathology laboratory for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), as well as pathology-related facilities for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
What I find most rewarding about laboratory planning is knowing that the spaces we create play a meaningful role in advancing science and improving lives. While I may not be the person making the next medical breakthrough, I take tremendous satisfaction in knowing that my work helps provide the environment where that breakthrough can happen for the people and research that take place within it.
