This little garden in Venice started as a concrete courtyard just outside the main living space. It’s not very big, but we wanted it to accommodate dining, lounging, a fire pit and a hot tub, each with its own distinct environment. I kept thinking about those hidden gardens you find behind the facades of Parisian buildings. You’d never know they were there. Lush, intimate, a little escape from the bustling city outside.
The second image is a photograph I took in Jardin du Luxembourg in 2016. I love how the green metal chairs feel like part of the landscape, sitting among the trees on that beautiful warm gravel. The quiet relationship between the furniture and the planting makes everything feel so continuous. I wanted to translate that same feeling into this courtyard, where blending the furnishings into the landscape actually creates a greater sense of space.
And with the stark modern architecture of the house, I wanted the garden to introduce some softness. Different elements, each with their own character, all in concert together.
I love how I carried the experience of Paris with me and eventually it found its way into something I made.
