Every other Thursday, we gather for Office Design Lunches to revisit projects, exchange ideas, and look at architecture from a fresh perspective.

This week, we went back to the beginning with Z-Haus, the first official project of Waechter Architecture. Ben walked us through the thinking behind its six offset rooms, connected by half-flight stairs that bring light, movement, and visual connection to every level.

Revisiting the project was a chance to look more closely at how section and circulation can shape the way we experience a home.

We're incredibly honored that Waechter Architecture has been named the Editor's Choice Winner for Architectural Visionary of the Year in the 2026 Architizer A+ Awards.

The recognition centers on our All-Wood Building research. It began with the Mississippi Workshop, our mixed-use headquarters in Portland and the first commercial project in Oregon to use mass timber for all primary structural components. A two-year USDA Forest Service Wood Innovations Grant then supported documentation, post-occupancy analysis, and design research, which produced three new all-wood prototypes for housing, office, and civic buildings.
For us, sustainability isn't only about performance. Buildings that last should also be places people remember.

Architecture can help us leave one place behind and arrive fully in another.

At Autocamp Sequoia, the clubhouse is a threshold. It gathers guests at the entry, then opens toward the trees, the river, and the campground beyond.

We’re honored to be included in Best-In-State Residential Architects list for the second year in a row.

Our work is rooted in making spaces that are open, enduring, and full of character. We’re grateful to our clients and collaborators who make that work possible, and to Forbes for recognizing our practice alongside so many talented firms across the state.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of it, and congratulations to all the firms included on this year’s list.

At Enfilade House, the house unfolds as a sequence.
One space leads to the next, with wood thresholds, framed views, and shifting light creating moments of connection and pause.
Simple in its idea, the enfilade gives the house a quiet rhythm, revealing the landscape and spaces of the home gradually, one moment at a time.
