Local designers in Des Moines, Iowa, and Destin, Florida, serving clients nationwide. Function first, no guessing. Jodi Koch Peterman has a passion for design.

We help homeowners, second-home buyers, investors, and businesses make confident design decisions before costly mistakes happen. It all began at the age of four when Jodi would “borrow” scraps of fabric from her grandmother’s workroom to decorate her doll house. Barbie just couldn’t make up her mind about the coordinating bedding and accessories! Since moving out of the city, getting married and having twins, Jodi’s career has taken many turns. In 2001 she and her family moved to Hillsborough, NJ. In 2003, Jodi saw an opportunity to further her career in Interior Design, so she took it and hasn’t looked back since. In early 2007, she assumed full ownership of the company and established Elizabeth Erin Designs. The primary goal of this business endeavor is to offer interior design services to every home owner by utilizing a unique pricing structure. This structure makes it affordable for anyone needing help with making decisions concerning their home, whether it is choosing colors for one room or an entire house, Elizabeth Erin Designs can do as much, or as little as the client needs. Jodi is happily married and the mother of beautiful twin girls - Hanna Elizabeth and Sydney Erin. The combination of their middle names begat ‘Elizabeth Erin Designs – Transforming Homes… One House at a Time’.

🎙️ NEW SPECIAL EPISODE: THE POLITICAL GAME

What if we’re part of the problem?

We complain about political division, misinformation, and the constant fighting. But what if we’re unknowingly participating in the very game we want to change?

In this special episode of Designing in 5D, I’m joined by Bekah Wagner, community advocate and singer-songwriter known as Becca Lauren, for a candid conversation inspired by her song The Political Game.

We’re talking politics, thinking for ourselves, questioning what we’re told, and finding common ground—even when we disagree.

And here’s a little food for thought: Fix your feed. Fix your mind.

Maybe real change starts with us.

What’s one thing you think we could all do differently?

Sometimes buyers love everything about a property except the way it looks right now.
The location is right.
The view is right.
The neighborhood is right.
But they cannot see themselves past the dated kitchen or someone else’s style.
NorthStar gives buyers a visual direction for what the property could become, helping them see beyond what is there today and understand the possibilities.
Sometimes people just need a little help seeing what’s possible.

Jennifer DeVito joins me on Designing in 5D to talk about contractor selection, communication, expectations, and what homeowners need to understand before handing over their project.
The right team can make a meaningful difference in how a design moves from vision to finished space.

A beautiful result takes more than good design or a good contractor.
The strongest projects happen when the client, designer, contractor, and trades understand the vision and work together to carry it through.

Communication matters.
Collaboration matters.
Craftsmanship matters.
And the details matter.

This Wednesday, Jennifer DeVito joins me on the Designing in 5D podcast to talk about choosing the right contractor and why the team surrounding your project can have such a big impact on the finished result.

Good design starts before demolition.
I'm sharing a look at a project before the work begins because this is when connected decisions really matter. Your flooring, tile, and other finishes need to work together in the actual space.

That's why I'm excited about The Groundwork with DESTIN Flooring America. Bring the questions you keep going back and forth on, and let's give your selections a clearer direction.

There are design decisions that can wait.
And there are design decisions that really cannot.
Furniture placement affects electrical.
Vanity design affects plumbing and lighting.
Flooring affects transitions and cabinetry.
The kitchen layout affects almost everyone.
The goal is not to have every pillow selected before construction begins.
The goal is to make the decisions construction needs while you still have choices.

A beautiful sample is not the whole plan.
Start with the floor, then look at everything that will live alongside it. Color, scale, pattern, and the finishes you already have all play a part.
If you're stuck trying to connect those decisions, bring your photos, samples, and questions to The Groundwork. Elizabeth Erin Designs and DESTIN Flooring America are teaming up to offer complimentary design guidance in the showroom.

Truth Tuesday: Why do we automatically call the contractor first?

If you’re building or remodeling, there are a lot of decisions that need to happen before anyone can accurately build the vision.
Layouts. Cabinetry. Lighting. Materials. Selections. How the spaces actually function together.

Those aren’t decisions I want my clients making while construction is already moving.
I believe in designing first, then building from an intentional plan — with the designer, contractor and architect communicating as a team.

So I’m curious:
If you were starting a new build or major remodel tomorrow, who would you call first — the designer or the contractor? And why?
I really want to hear your answer. I’ll meet you in the comments.
