BEACH SAFETY TIPS
🌊 Wear a life jacket if you do not know how to swim or when waves are large and conditions are rough.
💧 Stay hydrated. On hot days, your body loses water through sweat, and it is important to replace those fluids regularly.
🏖️ Be aware that Lake Erie’s bottom is not flat. Sudden drop-offs from raised sandbars can occur. A good rule of thumb is to stay in water no deeper than your waist when playing with friends.
⚠️ Currents in Lake Erie can be dangerous.
• Any current flowing faster than 2 mph is considered dangerous.
• Dangerous currents can exceed 5 mph—faster than an Olympic swimmer can swim.
• Currents can pull swimmers away from shore.
• Piers, breakwalls, and other structures can create dangerous currents.
🛟 If you get caught in a current:
• Stay calm.
• Flip onto your back and float.
• Follow the safest course to safety and swim out of the current when possible.
👀 Learn the signs of drowning.
🚨 If you see someone who needs help:
• Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring, life jacket, cooler, or inflated beach toy.
• Shout instructions and encourage them to flip onto their back and float until help arrives or they can safely swim out of the current.
• Seek assistance from park staff, lifeguards, friends, or others nearby.
• Call 911 immediately.
