* Save water as they require little to no irrigation.
* Need little to no maintenance, such as fertilization, pruning, or replanting.
* Are adapted to the local soil and environment, making them hardy against our cold winters and dry summers.
* Have natural defenses against insects and diseases.
* Improve native pollinator and wildlife habitat for food, shelter, breeding, and nesting.
* Create a sense of place—from your own landscapes to your favorite wild places.
* Enhance biodiversity by restoring our quickly vanishing regional landscapes.

It’s fall and all the garden centers and grocery stores are flooded with mums. We understand their appeal; they are dense and colorful when lots of other flowers have already gone to seed. But, like other cultivated “doubles,” all those petals prevent bees and butterflies from reaching the nectar and pollen producing parts of the flower. Which means no food for hungry insects.
But it’s ok! Just plant asters instead! This is the latest blooming aster we carry at Center for Native Plants: Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum leave). Smooth Blue Aster begins blooming in August and will continue to bloom through October. This photo was taken on October 15th with overnight temperatures below freezing, and she is still stunning!
