There’s something about a truly memorable hotel that stays with you long after you leave.

It’s rarely just one thing. It’s the way the spaces make you feel, the thoughtful details you didn't know you needed, and the sense that every element has been considered with your experience in mind.

We believe home should evoke that same feeling. Only instead of wishing you could stay a little longer, you get to experience it every day.

The kind of place where you look forward to a quiet Friday night, where having friends over feels better than going out, and where you find yourself appreciating the smallest details, even after years of living there.

That’s what we love about designing homes.

The opportunity to create something that feels extraordinary without ever feeling too precious to actually live in.

Because a beautiful home changes the way you experience the everyday.

And we think that’s worth investing in.

What began as a shared vision has become something we’re deeply proud to keep building.

This National Women’s Small Business Month, we’re reflecting on the years of ideas, relationships, projects, risks, and conversations that have shaped Sonderlust into what it is today.

Building a business together has asked us to keep evolving, trust one another, stay curious, and remain close to the kind of work we want to put into the world.

We’re proud of the spaces we’ve created, but also of the studio, team, and relationships that have grown around them.

There is still so much ahead, and we’re grateful to keep building it together.

A little preview of what’s taking shape.

There’s a point in every project when the bigger vision begins to reveal itself in the smallest details.

The edge of a material. The meeting of two finishes. A subtle proportion considered and reconsidered until it feels just right.

These are the moments when months of planning begin to feel tangible, and the character of a space starts to emerge.

Still in progress, with plenty left to refine. But the details are beginning to tell the story.

A lobby is an introduction. Before a guest settles in, orders a drink, or begins to explore, the space has already started telling them where they are.

At Devil’s Thumb Ranch, that story is rooted in place.

Warm wood, worn leather, layered textiles, stone, art, and objects with a sense of history create an environment that feels connected to the landscape beyond its walls.

What we love is that nothing asks for attention on its own.

The materials have depth.
The patterns feel collected rather than coordinated.
The artwork echoes the surroundings without becoming thematic.

Even the smallest details contribute to a larger sense of belonging.

That balance is what gives a space its character.

Not a single defining piece, but layers that feel as though they could only exist here.

A lobby designed not simply as a place to arrive, but as the beginning of the experience.

Pinterest shows you the finished room. It doesn’t show you this part.

The unpacking. The shifting. The adjusting. The standing across the room and realizing something needs to move three inches. The piece that worked perfectly on paper but needs to land differently once you see it in the space.

This is where a design really starts to come to life.

At Wild Horse, our team worked room by room, bringing together the fixtures, finishes, materials, furnishings and decorative lighting we had spent years imagining and planning. Seeing each layer in context, adjusting placement and scale, and making the small decisions that allow everything to begin working together as a whole.

It’s the part of the process that’s hard to capture in a rendering or specification, because so much of it comes down to experience, instinct and seeing everything together in the space for the first time.

The finished room may feel effortless.

Getting it there isn’t.

A little behind the scenes of what it takes to bring a Sonderlust space to life.

The pieces you live with become part of your everyday life.

The chair you always gravitate toward.
The dining table that brings everyone together.
The little details that make a room feel familiar, comfortable, and entirely your own.

We love the process of finding furnishings that feel like they belong.

Pieces that complement the architecture, bring warmth and character to a space, and reflect the people who will live with them.

There is something particularly rewarding about seeing a room come together and knowing that the pieces we’ve selected will become part of someone’s daily life.

The quiet mornings, the gatherings, the ordinary moments that eventually become cherished memories.

We’re revisiting a few of our completed residential projects and sharing the thoughtful details that make each home feel distinctly personal.

A moodboard is a study in what the home should feel like, not just how it should look.

Colors, textures, materials, and moments help set the direction for each space before the details come together.

Over the last five years, Sonderlust’s growth has happened quietly and organically.

Nearly every project has come through relationships.

No large marketing campaigns. No aggressive advertising. Just referrals.

In design, trust travels quickly.

When the experience of working together is a positive one, relationships with clients, builders, and collaborators tend to extend far beyond a single project and evolve into lasting partnerships.

Over time, those partnerships begin to form a network.

And that network becomes the foundation of a studio.

We don’t take any of it for granted. We’re incredibly grateful for every person who has trusted us, shared our name, and opened a door to what came next. Thank you. ✨

Materiality is where a space begins to move beyond what can be seen.

It’s in the weight of a stone, the softness of a textile, the grain of the wood, and the way a finish responds as the light changes throughout the day.

Each material brings something beyond color or pattern.

It brings texture, temperature, depth, movement, and its own relationship to everything around it.

That’s why selecting materials is never simply about finding something beautiful.

A sample can photograph perfectly and still feel completely wrong once it enters the room.

The scale may shift.
The texture may compete.
The finish may catch the light differently than expected.

So much of the process happens through interaction: touching, layering, comparing, moving things around, and seeing how one material changes the perception of another.

A space isn’t experienced as a collection of individual selections. It’s experienced as a whole.

And when the materiality is right, you may not be able to name exactly why the room feels the way it does. You just know that it does.
