Cherry, with a band of wenge set between two thin strips of maple.

This dry bar was designed for entertaining, and every inch inside has a job. There's hanging storage for w**e glasses, cubbies for w**e bottles, and rollout drawers and a tray for glasses and liquor.

The wenge band is the detail people notice: a dark stripe running across the front, framed in maple, so the whole cabinet reads as one piece.

Swipe for a look inside. Where would a bar like this go in your house: the dining room, the living room or the basement? Tell us below, and tag the person who'd be mixing the drinks.

Wood moves. Anyone who says a solid wood top won't hasn't watched one go through a New England winter.

Solid wood takes on moisture in humid summers and gives it back when the heat comes on. It swells and shrinks as it does, and nearly all of that happens across the grain. Along the length of a board, the change is tiny.

So you can't lock a wide top or panel down tight on all four sides. Fight the wood with glue and screws and it finds a way out: a crack, a gap, a cup. Build for it instead. That's why a frame-and-panel door lets its panel float in a groove, and why breadboard ends are fixed at the center and left free to move toward the edges.

Seen a crack open up in a table or a cabinet door? Tell us below, and share this with someone shopping for solid wood furniture.

Solid walnut, floating off the end of a kitchen island.

This dining table extends from the island and carries a drop leaf on an integrated hinge with a stainless steel pin. Underneath, custom "grabbers" we designed keep the table from sliding sideways. The grabber k***s, the leaf rails and the plug that caps the hinge pin are all turned by hand from purpleheart, a naturally purple hardwood that plays off the dark walnut.

Most people will never see those details. They're the reason a piece like this works every day.

Where does your family actually eat: at the island, at the table, or both? Tell us below, and share this with someone planning a kitchen.

There's a door to a bathroom hidden in this wall. Can you find it?

This multi-purpose built-in does two jobs at once. It's storage built in all maple and finished with custom moldings, and part of it is a secret Murphy door that opens to the bathroom behind it. Close it, and the doorway disappears into the cabinetry.

That's the fun of designing built-ins for the room instead of buying them off a shelf: the storage can hide what you'd rather not see, and the door can become part of the furniture.

Swipe to see it open. Did you spot it on the first try? Tell us below, and tag someone who's always wanted a secret door.

Built-ins aren't a trend. The Shakers were building storage into their walls long before anyone called it a design choice.

At Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, the Brick Dwelling was home to about 100 Shaker brothers and sisters, and it's fitted with built-in cupboards, drawers and peg rails. Storage that was part of the house kept a big shared home orderly, efficient and easy to clean.

The detail woodworkers still talk about: the drawers are dovetailed, and their sides taper. The museum says that construction is unique to the Shaker communities at Hancock, Tyringham and Enfield, Connecticut, and no one knows for sure why they built them that way.

Plain, useful, built into the house. It's the thinking we bring to every built-in we design.

A library built into the wall, with a window seat at its heart.

This red oak library was designed in layers: generous shelving, a window seat built right in, and rollout file drawers tucked below so the paperwork has a home too. Every opening is finished with our signature square bead detail, a crisp profile that frames each shelf and ties the whole wall together. Built by hand, start to finish.

It's a room that works every day: a place to read, a place to work, and storage that becomes part of the house.

Would you curl up here with a book or a coffee? Tell us below, and tag someone who's always wanted a reading nook.

The shimmering flecks across quarter-sawn white oak aren't a stain or a finish. They're part of the tree.

Oak has rays, ribbons of cells that run from the center of the log out toward the bark. Quarter-sawing cuts the log so the growth rings stand steep to the face of each board, and that slices right along the rays. They show up as flecks and ribbons across the grain. Woodworkers call it ray fleck.

There's a practical payoff, too. Wood shrinks and swells most along its growth rings, so quarter-sawn boards move less in width through the seasons than flat-sawn boards do. That stability is why it's a favorite for cabinet doors, panels and furniture, and a reason why we built a beautiful kitchen island from it.

Ray fleck or the cathedral grain of flat-sawn: which would you choose for your kitchen? Tell us below, and share this with someone planning a remodel.

Solid walnut, a true arched top, and a stained glass diamond window, handmade from start to finish.

An arch like this starts before any walnut gets cut. We build the bending form first, then shape the jamb, casing, and door to it. Swipe through the form, the arched jamb and casing, and the finished door.

Doors, built-ins, kitchens: if it has to fit exactly, that's our work. What would you have us build? The comments are open.

Quarter-sawn white oak, with an antique white oak mantel built right into the island.

The client asked us to work the old mantel into the design, so we built the island around it in quarter-sawn white oak and gave it storage on every side: deep drawers, cabinet space, and lift-up storage.

Would you build a piece of history into your kitchen? Tell us below.
