Sustainable prefab homes + offsite construction solutions. 🌎🌳🌤 Bensonwood is an ENERGY STAR Partner and a member of the US Green Building Council.

While Bensonwood is known for it's exceedingly artful timberframe homes, it is also acknowledged as an innovator in building hybrid and panelized homes. Through custom fabrication of highly insulated panels and designs adaptable to the owners' needs, Bensonwood has become the premier design-builder of energy-efficient, high-performance buildings across the United States. Some homes built by Bensonwood include two LEED Platinum-certified, Net-Zero public buildings in Maine and Vermont that create as much energy as they consume, and a Passive House in Vermont that requires no furnace. In 2012, Bensonwood launched a sister company, Unity Homes, who builds single family pre-designed high performance homes to reach a broader market. Learn more at www.bensonwood.com

Amanda Nelson and Curt Taylor represented Bensonwood at SPARK Kent this past weekend, joining tradespeople and crafts professionals from across the region.

Organized by TradesUp, SPARK gives young people a chance to work alongside professionals and experience the skills, creativity, and satisfaction that come with building something with their own hands. Bensonwood was glad to return as an Innovation Sponsor and support an organization working to create more opportunities for the next generation of tradespeople.

Thanks to Mason Lord, the TradesUp team, and everyone who helped make another SPARK event possible.

Earlier this week, members of our team attended Building Community: An Evening with Habitat for Humanity. The event celebrated the families, volunteers, donors, and local businesses helping make affordable homeownership possible in our region through this impressive organization.

A highlight of the night was hearing from the Allard-Croke family, who are planning to move into their new Habitat home before Thanksgiving. They spoke about how educational and gratifying the process has been, and how much the dedication of the Habitat team and volunteers has meant to them.

We felt the energy in the room, and we're excited to see the momentum building with more projects planned in the very near future!

Learning about panelized construction and high-performance homes gave these homeowners another path that felt more aligned with how they actually wanted to live.

After spending a long stretch moving around a lot, finishing their Värm also meant finally having a home base. As they put it, they were looking forward to “going to the beach on the weekend and growing flowers” and “starting actually living what we put on pause for a long time.”

For this pool house in Vermont, Bensonwood fabricated a custom kit of parts for our GC partner, Four Lite Design-Build , to install on site. The posts are Alaskan Yellow Cedar glulams, selected because the engineering required more strength than the available Port Orford Cedar could provide at those dimensions. Above the posts, the remaining timber elements are Port Orford Cedar.

With no diagonal braces in the design, the structure relies on concealed galvanized steel post bases to handle lateral forces and keep everything plumb and square. The hardware, joinery, virtual fabrication, and installation details all had to be coordinated closely before the package ever left our shop.

To ensure seamless installation, our production team provided a precise drilling template for the concrete piers so the anchor screws would land exactly where required by the Rothoblaas post bases. We use a lot of their hardware across our projects, and it played an important role here in keeping the structural solution clean and largely hidden.

The feedback from the field was exactly what we hoped to hear: everything fit, the hardware was accounted for, and the installation went smoothly.

A smaller structure, but the same level of care goes into getting every piece right.

In Vermont’s Champlain Valley, a new Zum came together over just a few weeks, and the homeowners spent plenty of time on site watching the process unfold.

“The quality is apparent, and that’s exactly what we were going for,” they shared. “We were blown away by their professionalism, attention to detail, and pride in their work.”

They were also onsite for the blower door test, which came in at 0.42 ACH. Tight results are something our raising crews work toward on every project, and there’s even a little friendly competition between teams to see just how far they can push the performance.

We’re grateful for the kind words and for the teams who bring that level of care to every stage of the build.

More than a decade after opening, Burr and Burton Academy’s Mountain Campus in Peru, Vermont continues to serve the purpose it was designed around: making the building itself part of the learning experience.

Designed by Randall Walter the Mountain Campus was conceived as a living classroom with ambitious performance goals. Triple-glazed windows, dense-packed cellulose insulation, locally sourced and reused materials, and a natural timber frame all contributed to a building that went on to achieve LEED Platinum certification and Net-Zero Energy status. The building was designed and fabricated by Bensonwood before its components were assembled on site.

It’s rewarding to look back at a project where high-performance design was intended not only to reduce energy use, but to help teach the next generation about the relationship between buildings and the environment.

Bensonwood Director of Business Development, Seth Clarke, was recently featured on the Real Estate Connections Podcast. Among other topics, he and host Mary Foerster discuss a common misconception in homebuilding: the idea that a house needs to “breathe.”

For much of the last century, what we have often called a breathing house was really uncontrolled air leakage through the building enclosure. High-performance construction takes a different approach, aiming for much greater control over airtightness and thermal performance from the start.

That control becomes much easier to achieve when the enclosure is designed as a system and fabricated through a repeatable manufacturing process.

This Thursday, Bensonwood's Tedd Benson, Seth Clarke and Joseph Murray will deliver a talk at NESEA- Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's BuildingEnergy NYC focused on one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry today: fragmentation.

Titled "A Dimensional Grammar for a More Interoperable Construction Industry,” the session will look at how shared dimensional standards could help designers, manufacturers, and builders work from a more coordinated foundation. Drawing on decades of experience with panelized building systems and offsite construction, the discussion will explore how moving more complexity into design and manufacturing can improve consistency, reduce inefficiency, and support more scalable high-performance housing.

The goal of this approach is to create enough common structure for better systems, products, and teams to work together more effectively.

Our team is looking forward to the conversation and to continuing the discussion with others working through many of the same challenges across the industry. Find out more in the link below:
