SoCal Homestead

Just a Military Spouse blooming where God sends me and learning homestead skills along the way. Follow along as I grow, sew, and keep chickens and bees!

After 13 years and 10 moves, my husband and I have bought our dream property in San Diego county!

Lots of rain last night! I'm so excited for the rainy season here in Socal.

I've got a couple ground cover/clover mixes of seeds to spread and hopefully improve the soil and begin building a good forage crop for animals on the years to come.

My partner in crime is back from deployment!!!

We've spent the last couple weeks enjoying family life all back together and he's also been working.
Now his post deployment leave has started and he is already helping me tackle projects!

Who likes the new chainsaw? 😜

Baby rattlesnake on the path where my toddler son was walking!

While I have a huge appreciation for snakes in general and even rattlesnakes specifically, I have to protect my family.

I was so nervous, but also that momma bear instinct was strong and I did what I had to do to dispatch it

This is a part of living on land - managing the property and appreciating the wildlife that also lives there. And we have enough land to leave the wildlife a piece and also to clear anything near the perimeter of our house.

We teach our children to live and respect all creatures that God has made. We also learn about his design for creation and how ecosystems work, and animals are interdependent on each other.

If we didn't have snakes we would have horrible rat and mice and frog and toad populations, and that wouldn't be ideal either.

Would you choose to leave it or relocate it or dispatch a rattlesnake near your home? Why or why not?

Cooler weather is making me so excited to begin my fall/winter garden!

It's been a while since was able to really keep a garden, and usually we love every 3 years I finally get used to the climate, we have to relocate.

I'm excited that I don't have to do everything the first year.

I'm excited that I can rotate plants and try new things and learn from my mistakes and hopefully build each year a better, fuller, more productive garden.

The MVP of the homestead currently...Mr Hank is not only the sweetest boy, he is a vigilant guardian all night long!

We hear coyotes daily, and have seen them regularly, on our land, in the daylight! But we haven't lost any chickens to predators because he roams and barks and keeps them away.

Here he is at dusk, settling into his post as the last bit of daylight trickles away.

He is just over a year and has had no training - it's just a great breed and their God-given instincts to patrol their land and defend their territory.
