Elk Ridge Passive House is set into a Missoula hillside among the pines. The lower level is carved into the earth, which insulates the bedrooms and office. Above, the living and dining spaces open through a band of glass toward the ridge, oriented to catch the low winter sun.

Super-insulated concrete walls ensure the home stays comfortable through a Montana winter, with a ground-source heat pump supporting the passive strategies. Locally reclaimed Douglas fir lines deep overhangs that shade the glass in summer.

Paradise Valley, Arizona. A hillside shaped by centuries of wind and rain.

The Charles Drive House takes its cues from that slope. The masonry stripes echo the layered geology of the mountain: darker, solid block above the main floor, alternating bands below, like the high water marks. The raw steel cladding is meant to rust, which is nature’s way of painting.

Along the glass, the steel overhang is serrated rather than straight, a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright’s observation that the desert line is dotted. The shadow it casts lands soft and fuzzy, like peering out from under your own eyelashes toward the McDowell Mountains.

Completed in late 2018 as a spec house, a partnership between Eddie Jones, FAIA, his wife Lisa, and Andy Byrnes of Construction Zone. Architects investing in their own strengths, and building something for whoever calls it home next.

A home built of “mud and shadow.”

That was homeowner Michael Lacey’s request for a hilltop site at the base of the Phoenix Mountains in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Rammed earth walls, compacted dirt raised directly from the land, frame the main spaces. Between them, delicate Douglas Fir screens filter the desert sun. The wood will weather to gray far faster than the earth beside it, a slow return to the land inspired in part by artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Casa del Nido Osprey sits between the dunes and the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. Wide arches allow natural light to flow into the home. Brick boveda vaults bring warmth inside, and a rebar sculpture on the roof honors the nest-building traditions of the coastal osprey.

In 2013, the home, designed by Eddie Jones for he and his family to enjoy, received an AIA Arizona Merit Award in the Residential category. Learn more about the design on our website: jonesstudioinc.com

Beside a desert preserve in Phoenix, a neighboring water tank, the kind of view most would design around, became the starting point for this rammed-earth home. Thick earthen walls hold a steady temperature, a wall of glass faces north toward the rock formations, and rain travels down a chain to underground storage, so water-wise infrastructure becomes something sculptural.

Fit means letting the site, the climate, and the people shape the work.

Every home we design starts with a conversation about who will live there and what the land has provided.

On the Oregon coast, that meant designing for coziness and connection: a circular garden on one side, a transparent wall on the other, framing the expansive view of Cannon Beach. In the desert, it looks entirely different. The work changes. The approach doesn’t.

Jones Studio has been named to Forbes’ 2026 “America’s Top 200 Residential Architects” list. We’re grateful to the clients who trust us with their homes, and to the collaborators and craftspeople who build them.

Thank you, Forbes & congratulations to all of the talented studios on the list.
