Rot can hide inside a limb where you'd never see it from the ground. 🔍

This is what we found when our crew took a limb down with a lift next to a house. Dark, decayed wood and a hollow inside. A limb that looks fine from below isn't always sound.

When a limb lets go, it doesn't check what's underneath. 🍃

This limb came down across a backyard fence and onto the lawn. Before the next big wind, limbs over fences, roofs and driveways are the ones we look at first: dead wood, cracks where a limb meets the trunk, and anything hanging over something that can't take the weight.

Same lot. Here's where we finished, and how we got there.

The first two are the after. Open ground from the white fence across to the wood fence, and the big oak still standing over it.

The rest is the work. That's the lift up in a leaning trunk, taking it down in pieces right beside a fence. The skid steer and the chipper working through the brush. And the trailer loaded with the big wood.

We left the big oak. Clearing around a tree like that is the job, not taking it.

What do we check on a leaning tree? 🌳

First, whether the lean is new or has always been there. Then the soil at the base: lifting, cracking, or roots pulled up on one side. Then what's under or beside it. This one was leaning onto a block wall beside a house, and the crew took it down.

A lean the tree has had for years is usually just how it grew. What worries us is a lean that's new or getting worse, soil lifting or cracking at the base, or roots pulled up on one side.

Before we touched anything.

This is me walking the lot and calling out the plan. What gets trimmed, what comes out.

The camphor on the fence line comes out, and so does everything grown in along that fence. The oak gets trimmed, and it all gets cleaned up.

There's a live oak in the back that's uprooted. And there's one limb I'm concerned about — whether it was hit by lightning or took a hit when that tree fell over.

That's the starting point. The after is next.
