I am doing a series of posts on trees you can grow inside your home. The trees are all tropical so they must stay inside. This post is on the Norfolk Island pine. As I noted before I am doing the posts on tropical trees. This lush tree grows natively only on Norfolk Island, a tiny isolated territory, in Australia, in the South Pacific Ocean.
Though it looks like an evergreen with its needles,it truly is a tropical plant. To be accurate, it does also grow on two neighboring tiny islands next to Norfolk Island, they are Nepal, and Phillip.
They are so popular around Christmas time because they look so festive and that is the time of the year they are dug and brought to
The US. If you want to buy one , right after Christmas they are marked down. Find them at local stores like Smiths, Walmart and other stores. Place wet pebbles at the base of the tree to help provide moisture.
Because they can grow 18 ft. Or taller you will need high ceilings for this tree. Fertilize it every 30 days with Miracle Grow, then when it is 4ft. Tall you will need to get it a fertilizer wth extra nitrogen, because trees use up a lot of nitrogen.
You will be surprised how fast it grows. Keep it away from heating vents and place close to a window. Enjoy this beautiful specimen.!
