Clocks go back today. Test your CO alarms while you’re at it!

Carbon monoxide has no color or smell, so a working alarm is the best way to know it’s there. Here’s what to check:

Test each alarm using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Replace batteries if needed (unless it has a sealed battery).
Check the expiration date and replace the unit when required.
Schedule recommended maintenance for your heating equipment.

If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911 from a safe location. Don’t go back in until emergency responders say it’s safe.

A comfortable home should also be a safe home. Did you test yours today?

As you take the kids trick-or-treating this Halloween, keep an eye out for Accutemp Engineering stickers on the outdoor HVAC units around your neighborhood!

You might spot a system we’ve installed. And that outdoor condenser? It’s more than just a box beside the house. It’s an important part of many home heating and cooling systems, working with the indoor equipment to keep your home comfortable year-round.

Curious about what your neighbors are installing? Different systems offer different benefits for comfort, energy efficiency, and year-round performance.

And here’s your Halloween reminder: as the Massachusetts temperatures drop, it’s a good time to make sure your own heating system is ready for the colder months ahead.

Happy Halloween from Accutemp Engineering!

Before making a decision, consider these three factors:

-Age: Older equipment may become less reliable over time. If yours is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, it may be worth exploring replacement options.

-Efficiency: If your heating system struggles to keep your home comfortable or your energy bills are climbing, an older, less efficient system could be contributing.

-Repair history: Occasional repairs may make sense, but frequent breakdowns and rising repair costs can be a sign that replacement is worth considering.

Sometimes, a repair is all you need. Other times, investing in a newer system may offer better long-term value. The right choice depends on your equipment, its condition, and your heating needs.

At Accutemp Engineering, we help Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire homeowners make informed decisions about their heating systems so they can stay comfortable through the colder months.

As fall temperatures drop across Massachusetts, a few common heating mistakes can affect your comfort, energy bills, and HVAC system performance.

Here are three things to watch out for:

Ignoring strange noises or odors: These can signal a potential issue. If you notice something unusual, have it checked before it gets worse.

Forgetting to clean your mini-split filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow and can make it harder for your system to heat your home efficiently. Check and clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Waiting until your heat stops working to schedule maintenance: Preventative maintenance can help identify potential problems before the coldest days arrive.

A little attention now can help you stay comfortable all season long. At Accutemp Engineering, we want Massachusetts homeowners to feel confident their HVAC systems are ready for the colder months.

Which of these mistakes have you made before? Let us know in the comments!

Winter in Massachusetts puts serious demand on your heating system. The worst time to discover a problem is when you need your heat the most.

A preventative maintenance check gives your system a chance to catch potential issues before they become bigger problems — from worn components and airflow issues to other problems that could leave you without heat during a cold snap.

Accutemp's preventative maintenance customers get an added benefit: if you lose heat, you're automatically bumped to the top of our service list. When temperatures drop and demand is high, that priority can make a real difference.

When was the last time your system had maintenance?

If it’s been a while, now is a good time to get your system checked before peak winter demand arrives.

Cold spots around your home don’t always mean you need to turn up the thermostat.

If you have a ceiling fan, try using its winter/reverse setting on a low speed during the colder months. This can help gently circulate warm air that collects near the ceiling and distribute it more evenly throughout the room.

Just make sure the fan is actually set to its winter/reverse mode. The correct direction can vary by fan, so check the manufacturer's instructions if you're unsure.

A ceiling fan won't replace proper heating, but improving air circulation may help make a room feel more comfortable without immediately raising the thermostat.

If some rooms stay noticeably colder than others even with good air circulation, that could point to an issue with insulation, ductwork, airflow, or the heating system itself.

Do you use your ceiling fans during the winter?
