As we get into fall and no longer need our air conditioners on, you may start thinking about covering your outdoor A/C unit.
Some homes really don’t need a full A/C cover, especially if you have a Trane air conditioner with a WeatherGuard top, which acts like a built-in cover. Most modern air conditioners, including Trane units, are built to sit outside through rain, snow and Ohio weather.
But an A/C cover can be a big help if your outdoor unit sits under trees and doesn’t have a WeatherGuard top. If you’re always finding your outdoor unit packed with leaves, we recommend using a breathable cover that won’t trap moisture inside and putting it on in the fall.
The biggest thing to remember is to NEVER RUN YOUR AIR CONDITIONER WITH THE COVER ON. That can cause major damage. Only have the A/C cover on if you’re not running it, and make sure to take it off again in the spring.
If you have a heat pump, don’t cover it. That outdoor unit still runs in the winter, and covering it while it’s running can cause major problems.
