STEEPED IN HISTORY 🫖
Chapter One: The Birth of Tea
Camellia sinensis — Where Every Cup Begins
Every great story has a beginning. Ours begins thousands of years ago, in the mist-covered mountains and forests of Asia, with a remarkable evergreen plant known simply as the tea plant (茶樹), or by its botanical name, Camellia sinensis.
According to an ancient Chinese legend, tea was discovered in 2737 BCE by Emperor Shen Nong. As the story goes, the emperor was boiling water beneath a tree when a gentle breeze carried several leaves into his pot. Curious about the inviting aroma, he tasted the infusion—and tea was born.
While historians regard this as legend rather than documented fact, archaeological discoveries confirm that tea was enjoyed in China more than 2,000 years ago. What began as a plant valued for its medicinal qualities would eventually become one of the world’s most beloved beverages.
🌿 One Plant, a World of Possibilities
Here’s something that might surprise you: black, green, white, oolong, and pu-erh teas all originate from the same plant—Camellia sinensis.
Their remarkable differences arise largely from how the leaves are handled after harvest. Withering, rolling, oxidation, heating, and drying transform the leaves into teas with distinctly different colors, aromas, and flavors.
Over the centuries, this extraordinary plant would inspire poets and emperors, travel ancient trade routes, shape cultural traditions, and influence the course of world history.
And that is the story we’re setting out to explore.
We invite you to experience a little of that history for yourself, whether at our shop in downtown Sequim or online at sequimspiceandtea.co.
