Half the houses in America were built before 1980.

That matters more than it sounds. Structural repairs now make up over half of home repair costs in the US, and those costs have climbed more than 20% in just two years.

Here's the gutter connection. Around half of all foundation problems trace back to water not being carried away from the house. When roof water dumps right against the foundation every storm, the soil saturates, then swells and shrinks with freeze-thaw cycles. Over time, that's how foundations crack and basements flood.

Upstate NY takes it further. Our freeze-thaw cycles push water into small foundation cracks and widen them, season after season.

Gutters don't fix a foundation problem. But they keep a drainage problem from becoming one. Water carried clear of the house is the cheapest foundation protection there is.

If you're not sure where your roof water is landing, walk the perimeter after the next heavy rain and look for washed-out soil or standing water near the foundation.

Most homeowners wait until they see a problem before doing anything about their gutters.

A national survey found 56% of homeowners don't act until they notice an issue, and 54% have watched a problem get worse before dealing with it.

We get it. Gutters are out of sight and out of mind. But waiting usually turns a small fix into a bigger one. A loose hanger is a quick repair. A section that's been pulling away for two seasons often takes the fascia with it.

Some quick checkpoints:

Water spilling over the front of the gutter during rain
Seams or corners that drip every time
Sections sagging or pulling away from the house
Paint peeling or stains on the siding below the gutterline
Soil washed out along the foundation after heavy rain

One or two of those can often be repaired. Several together usually means replacement is the better money.

Not sure which side your house falls on? That's exactly what a free estimate is for. We'll walk the system and give you an honest answer, even if the answer is "you've got a few more years."

Serving the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, and Catskills.

Two downspouts. One corner.

It happens more often than you'd think. During a gutter replacement, both downspouts end up on the same side of the house. That corner gets double the water every time it rains.

If the grade also slopes back toward the house there, you've got the worst combination: twice the runoff, landing right where the soil falls in.

The fix is usually simple. Redirect one downspout to the opposite corner, or add an extension so the water discharges farther out. It's a quick decision during an install, and a lot harder to undo after that corner has been taking double water for years.

If your gutters are being replaced, it's worth asking where each downspout lands. Free estimates across Upstate NY.

A new gutter run next to old gutters can look fine for a season. Then the joint where new meets old starts to leak.

The seam between the new section and the old one is usually the first spot to go. And if the rest of the system is undersized or pulling away, replacing one run only fixes part of the problem.

Sometimes one run is the right call. If the other sections are solid and pitched right, replacing the bad stretch makes sense. If hangers are loose and other seams are already leaking, patching one run often just spreads the cost out over a few years.

We'll tell you straight which one it is. Free estimates across Upstate NY.

A small drip at a gutter joint is easy to overlook, but water can work its way behind the gutter and contribute to fascia rot.

Aluminum gutters expand and contract as Upstate NY temperatures change. Over time, that movement can loosen sealant at miters and joints. A joint can often be re-sealed, but if it keeps leaking in the same spot, the section may be past patching.

Seamless gutters reduce the number of joints since each run is formed on-site in one piece, with seams at corners and downspout outlets.

July 2026 was a reminder of what gutters are up against. Albany logged 5.45 inches of rain in a single day. The second-wettest day ever recorded there. Schodack picked up 11.8 inches over three days, and basements flooded around the region.

That much rain in a few hours is the real test of a gutter system. When gutters are clogged, undersized, or pulling away, roof water lands right against the foundation instead of being carried clear.

Worth checking your gutters before the next heavy rain.

Before the freeze sets in, make sure your gutters are clear.

Wet leaves and debris can trap water in the gutter. When that water freezes, it adds weight to the hangers and fascia. Freeze-thaw cycles can also stress seams and end caps, while meltwater with nowhere to drain may refreeze at the roof edge.

Cleaning before the freeze is the last easy window to help keep your system draining through winter. Need a hand? All Things Gutter provides gutter cleaning across Upstate NY.

Ice dams don’t start in the gutter. They usually begin when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof. That water runs toward the colder eaves and can refreeze there.

Clogged gutters don’t cause the dam, but debris can slow or hold meltwater at the roof edge and add to refreezing. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear helps water drain, though it won’t fix the attic heat-loss behind an ice dam.

Before the first freeze, check your gutters, and if ice dams have been a problem, have your attic insulation and ventilation checked too.

Where the water lands matters. Older homes are common around Upstate NY, and many were built before modern drainage practices were widespread.

When a downspout sends water right beside the foundation, it can pool and keep the soil saturated. Ongoing moisture, along with freeze-thaw cycles, can put added stress on foundations and contribute to basement moisture. Foundation repairs can be a major expense, and directing roof runoff away from the house is one practical step homeowners can take.

Downspout extensions, splash blocks, and grading that slopes away from the foundation can help move water away from the wall. Not sure where yours is draining? We offer free estimates.

Ice dams start with heat escaping from the house into the attic, not with the gutters.

That heat warms the roof, snow melts and the water can refreeze at the colder roof edge. Clogged gutters can hold up that meltwater and add to the trouble, but cleaning alone won’t stop ice dams or fix attic heat loss.

What a gutter cleaning before the freeze does help with: clearing leaves and debris, flushing downspouts, and making sure the system can drain freely. It’s worthwhile prep, just not an ice-dam cure.
