Is your waterproof vinyl floor really waterproof? 💧

When shopping for luxury vinyl plank (LVP)—whether it’s SPC or WPC—one of the biggest selling points you'll hear is that the core is 100% waterproof. And it’s true!

The composite material itself won't swell, warp, or break down when exposed to moisture from above. However, there’s an important distinction every homeowner, designer, and builder should know:

🔸 Waterproof material doesn't automatically mean waterproof installation.

Here is what happens beneath the surface during heavy water exposure or flooding:

🔸 The Seams: Click-lock floating floors create a tight connection, but those joints are not hermetically sealed. Under standing water or heavy spills, liquid can slip through the seams.

🔸 The Perimeter: Gaps left around the room’s edges for natural expansion and contraction can also allow water to bypass the surface layer.

🔸 The Trapped Moisture: Once water gets underneath the floor, it has nowhere to go. It gets trapped against your subfloor, creating a hidden breeding ground for mold, mildew, and rot.
