Good lighting in a bathroom is mostly a question of where it comes from.

Here it comes from the mirror itself, lit around its edge, so the glow lands on the herringbone tile behind it. With the light doing the decorating, the counter only had to stay out of its way.

Nobody has ever complained about looking well lit.

The television is in this photograph. You may have needed a second to find it.

That is the whole idea. Wall and ledge in the same blue, so the screen sits inside a field of color rather than on top of one, and a pair of city paintings stacked beside it with considerably more to say.

Nobody is pretending the television is not there. It simply does not get to be the most important thing in the room.

We opened the San Ramon studio over a year ago. We are only now getting around to the ribbon.

In fairness, we were busy. Raashi Design has been designing Bay Area homes since 2012, across renovations, new construction and furnishings, and we tend to stay with a project from the first planning conversation right through installation day. The ribbon kept getting moved.

One chair can set the temperature of a whole room.

Teal velvet, a back high enough to actually support someone, and a single orange pillow doing the work an entire shelf of accessories usually fails to do. Everything around it stays neutral, which is the only reason it lands.

You decide how you feel about a house in the first ten feet.

Before the kitchen. Before the view. Before anyone mentions the square footage.

A console at the right height, a mirror above it, and somewhere to put keys down that is not the floor. It is the only room every visitor sees, and usually the last one anybody plans.

The sofa was never meant to be the loudest thing in this room.

Deep navy chenille, tufted and low, sitting quietly beneath a painting that carries the color for the entire space. The pillows move across gold, cream and blue without repeating it, and the textured white credenza keeps the wall behind from going flat.

Every room needs one thing worth looking at, and the good manners to let it be looked at.

A house should be able to hold what came before it.

A carved wooden Ganesha the family had long before any of this began, given a console of his own beside the fireplace and a mirror behind for depth. Set at the height where you notice him rather than walk past him.

Not styling. Placement.

A bedroom is the one room nobody else is going to see, which is exactly why it gets skipped.

Deep navy behind the bed so the wall recedes and the headboard stands away from it. Bedding with a fine, clean texture, enough interest to be worth looking at and never enough to be busy. A nightstand with an open shelf, because the things you reach for at night should not be behind a door.

Guest rooms get all the attention. This is the one you wake up in.

Nobody photographs their drawers. We are making an exception.

Felt-lined inserts, sized for what actually goes in them, so a necklace has somewhere to lie flat and the rings are not in a dish by the sink. One conversation at the drawing stage, and a fraction of the cost of whatever is sitting on the counter above it.

Height is easy to admire and hard to sit in.

A room this tall behaves like a hotel lobby unless something pulls it back to human scale. A tight group of chairs on a textured rug. A long console holding the wall at eye level. Art stacked so it climbs the volume instead of floating somewhere in the middle of it.

The instinct in a tall room is to buy taller things. Usually it is the reverse.
