If you build or rate to the DOE Efficient New Homes Program, there are updates worth knowing before the new year.

The Department of Energy has released its fall 2026 revisions, and they apply to projects with permit dates on or after January 1, 2027. The changes clarify requirements across Indoor AirPlus certification, California’s energy requirements, the multifamily documents, and the Phius performance pathway, many of them developed through ongoing input from participating builders and raters.

The full requirements, policy records, and a forthcoming training video are the best place to get the specifics. Review them through RESNET® or your overseeing certification organization so you’re ready ahead of 2027.

This October, RESNET® is glad to take part in the Annual Meeting of APA, The Engineered Wood Association.

Strong, high-performing homes start with what they’re built from, which makes the engineered wood community a natural one for RESNET to connect with. Ryan Meres will be on-site to represent RESNET, reflect on where the industry is headed, and share in the conversations shaping the future of home construction.

It’s a chance to strengthen the relationships across the building industry that help raise the quality of the homes we all work to deliver.

HERS® Raters understand something most people don’t, how a home actually gets built, tested, and verified from start to finish. That perspective is already shaping conversations about how homes get built, and it’s making a difference.

In this episode of RESTalk, host Bill Spohn talks with Phil Crone of Leading Builders of America and Paulette McGhie, Programs Manager at RESNET®, about where that field experience is already at work, from preserving smart verification requirements to supporting the kind of predictable, well-run processes that help keep homes affordable. They also talk about how any Rater can be part of it, no policy expertise required.

The through line: the people who know how buildings actually work are already helping shape the decisions that affect them.

RESNET® is glad to be part of the 2026 ET Summit, the ETCC's premier gathering for the people accelerating California's energy transition.

Executive Director Shelby Gatlin will join the panel "Building Affordable, Low-Carbon Communities: Addressing Operational and Embodied Carbon," a conversation about how we deliver homes that are both better for the planet and within reach for the people who live in them. It's a challenge that sits right at the intersection of affordability, performance, and verification, and it's exactly the kind of work the HERS® Index was built to support.

If you're attending, connect with Shelby to talk about the role third-party verified home performance plays in reaching these goals.

See you there, October 20–21.

For years, building a better home has meant building a more energy-efficient one. Water has been the missing piece, until now.

HERSH2O® gives water the same treatment the HERS® Index gave energy: a verified, whole-house rating that turns something invisible into a number you can actually see and compare. For builders, it's a way to prove the quality they're putting into a home. For buyers, it's one more signal of what a home will really cost to run, at a time when every bill counts.

HERS® Raters see firsthand how energy codes transition from policy into practice. That experience gives them an important voice in conversations about energy efficiency, housing affordability, and the requirements that shape home construction for the better.
