One switch changes how your whole home feels.

Dimming isn't just "lower." It's how a room goes from wide awake to wind down. Kitchen: bring it down once the cooking's done. Living room: dim the overhead and let the lamps carry the evening. Bedroom: warm and low for the last hour of the day. Bathroom: soft enough for a 2am trip.

Your entryway is the first thing anyone sees, and it is usually the last thing anyone lights properly.

Two numbers fix it. Add your entry's width and length in feet, and that total in inches is roughly the chandelier diameter you want. Then keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet off the floor.

A 6 by 8 foot entry? Around a 14 inch fixture. That's the whole calculation.

Your table has a shape. Your chandelier should match it.

Island or long table, go linear. Round table, go round. Then leave 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, adding about 3 inches for every foot of ceiling over 8 feet.

Settle something for us. Fan with a built-in light, or fan on its own with a separate fixture doing the lighting?

One camp wants fewer things on the ceiling and one switch. The other camp thinks a fan light kit is never the prettiest light in the room. Both have a point.

Some outdoor lighting is an afterthought. Troy Lighting's is not.

The shiplap is done. The lighting is not.

Modern farmhouse lighting comes down to four moves:

1. Start with a wood-blade fan. The grain softens the whole room.
2. Let warm metal do the balancing, so the look stays modern instead of going full rustic.
3. Add a lantern chandelier for the shape that says farmhouse.
4. Light it at more than one height. Overhead, wall, and table light together are what make a room feel warm in the evening.
