Store by Steph turns 11 years old TODAY!!! 🎉 And yes, I sorted the confetti by color. Some habits don’t take a day off. 😂 To celebrate, here are 11 things I wish every client knew before we started working together.

1. Organizing is about creating structure.
2. You don’t need the cardboard boxes. Recycle them today!
3. Getting rid of obvious trash and recycling is a great first step.
4. Keep one “bag-of-bags”, toss the rest.
5. Use your vertical space.
6. Build on your existing habits. That’s how you’ll create a system that sticks.
7. If you wait to be ready, you will never start. Today is tomorrow!
8. Things need to be easy to access, but easier to put away.
9. Every home needs a “drop zone.”
10. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on bins.
11. The only right system is the one you can maintain.

Thank you to every amazing client who has trusted me with their homes over the past 11 years. ❤️ Which tip are you trying first?

Don't get me wrong, it can be very cathartic to do a full decluttering reset in the fall, but you may not need to! If you are craving quick coziness, here are some simple autumnal resets you can do right away.

None of these need new bins or baskets. Whatever's already holding your throws or catching your shoes at the door can do the job. Every item just needs a clear home for the season. Mischief managed!

Which one are you tackling first this weekend? 🤔

Two sessions and a lot of sorting later, the shelves are labeled and this artist can actually get to creating again! Still more to label as we go.

A cleared work surface changes everything. It means she can think clearly and easily pick a project instead of digging through piles first.

When there’s this much out all the time, it gets overwhelming fast, and it’s hard to get anything done. The clutter was immobilizing her. Now she’s free of it!

What’s cluttering your work surface right now?

You know I love a checklist! My thoughts on where to start: The coat closet is usually the one people put off longest, and it's also the first thing your guests see walking in AND it has the most impact on improving your daily life when it's organized.

Do any of these resonate as being helpful before the holidays start? I'd love to hear if and what you are going to work on next!

Pick one this week and one next week, and over time, you'll be ready for company without losing a whole weekend to it.

I first organized this cabinet three years ago. At the time, entertaining items lived on top and health and medical items sat on the bottom. It worked for a long time, but then this client’s life and needs changed, so the cabinet needed to change right along with them! That’s the thing with organizing - it has to grow and shift with you.

We made the often-accessed items easy to reach at hand and eye level, so no bending is required. Now, bending is only needed for what’s on the bottom now, and those are the items that rarely get touched.

Is there a cabinet in your house still set up for the life you used to have? ✨

I find this very true - there is just a lot of external stimulus during the holidays. Don't get me wrong - it's my favorite time of year! But it can be a lot, especially for those who get overwhelmed by clutter. Clearing things out in the fall, when the earth is also mirroring the process of letting go, can feel really good and is a great preparation! But it's better to start now, not the day before Thanksgiving.

So, if you only have twenty minutes this week, spend them on the one drawer you dread opening! Starting small is a great way to begin.

Every client project I start begins that way: we look at challenging area of the home without the pressure to finish the whole house in a weekend. It's so satisfying and motivates the client to keep going. ♥️🍂

This is the very first thing you see walking into this beach cottage kitchen, so it had a lot riding on it. Pet supplies get used here more than almost anything else, but the sheer variety of baskets and bins competing for the same six inches of counter space was making the whole entryway feel chaotic.

We gave everything a real category and moved to uniform storage so everything fits. Anything that didn’t need to live in this prime spot got relocated somewhere with less foot traffic. My client walked in and said it finally felt like her kitchen again!

Most of my days are spent helping people let go in order to feel more peaceful and centered in their lives.

When I drive away after a session, they get to enjoy their home in a new way. They find they have more time to focus on what matters to them most - the people (and pets!) and places they love, more free time to enjoy the world, more time to be invest in themselves and others.

I feel so blessed to be able to give that to my clients every day!

I loved setting up this beverage and breakfast bar in my client's new Manhattan Beach home! Everything they reach for in the morning stays out and visible, so there's no decision-making before 8am. It's a good reminder to set spaces up to accommodate you and your routines. It's YOUR home and the setup should reflect your specific needs.✨

If your adjustable pantry shelves have stayed in the exact same spot since move-in day, this is your sign to review and edit! Adapting the shelf height to fit the category lets you maximize the full extent of the space. This is especially helpful for taller items like oils or stacked canned goods.

For the sheet pans and cutting boards on the bottom, I used the 4-sort dividers from The Container Store to store them vertically. Standing them up this way makes grabbing the right one so much easier, and it’s also satisfying to look at. ✨
