Chrysanthemums!
Named by Greek word “Chrysos” meaning gold and “Anthemon” flower. Deemed Queen of the Fall Flowers! Most resistant flower to frost and colder temperatures.
The Mum is an ancient and beloved plant. The history began with an elderly Chinese emperor that heard there was a magical herb that granted eternal youth. The story said it grew on Dragonfly Island and had to be picked by a young person. The emperor sent 24 children on a difficult journey to the island to seek the magical herb. When the children arrived, they discovered the island deserted. The only plant was a golden Chrysanthemum. To this day, this gold Chrysanthemum is a symbol of Chinese culture. Later the imperial gold was replaced with red of the Peoples Republic by Mao TseTung.
The mum is the flower of the month of November.
In ancient times, the roots were used as a medicine for headaches. The plant was used as a culinary herb for hundreds of years.
In Japan, they have a national Mum day called “Festival of Happiness.” It is one of five ancient festivals that still go on today. The Chrysanthemum represents longevity, rejuvenation, and nobility. There is a “Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum” in Japan. This is a highly regarded position for an individual.
The French brought Mums to the Western World. The first was called “Old Purple.” Lots of countries like Belgium and Austria use them as funeral flowers. In Germany, white Chrysanthemums are displayed in homes for Christmas. In Victorian times, the United States had the Mum symbolize friendship, cheerfulness, compassion, loyalty and devotion. Buddhists use them in ceremonies and offerings.
The Chrysanthemum has reached many cultures and used in a variety of traditions worldwide. Every fall, many Americans decorate their porches with these beautiful flowers. We all love the Chrysanthemum! Come pick out your favorite!
