Bonsai Northwest Bonsai Northwest is Seattle’s premier bonsai nursery and community hub for over 40 years. Bonsai Northwest was founded by the incredibly talented Sharon Muth.

Discover trees, tools, pottery, wire, rare bonsai material, expert advice, classes, demos, workshops, and a welcoming place for bonsai lovers. Bonsai Northwest has been supporting the art and hobby of bonsai in the Pacific Northwest since 1985. She founded the business to sell her handcrafted bonsai pots to local club members. As the business expanded, it incorporated finished bonsai trees, beginner bonsai lessons, and fine Japanese pottery. When Sharon’s son, John Muth, took the reins of the family business, he pioneered importing bonsai trees and expanded the availability of bonsai pottery throughout the U.S. Bonsai Northwest is still dedicated to serving the bonsai community.

Part 4 of our 13-part short video series.

We sometimes get asked: “what kind of tree is a bonsai tree?” And sometimes we’re told that, “I always thought they were special dwarfed trees.”

Most any species of plant can be used for bonsai. The environment or climate where you live, may be the determining factor as to what particular species of plant or tree does best. Some species respond better to bonsai techniques than others.

As always, we welcome questions, comments and dialogue!

Bonsai Northwest will be joining the vendors at the PSBA Annual Fall Sale on Sunday, November 8!

This is one of the best bonsai shopping opportunities of the year in the Pacific Northwest, with vendors and PSBA members from around the region offering bonsai, pre-bonsai, raw material, pots, and other bonsai supplies at a range of price points.

We’re looking forward to bringing some of our material to the sale and spending the afternoon connecting with fellow bonsai enthusiasts. Whether you’re searching for your next tree, looking for supplies, or just stopping by to see what’s available, there will be plenty to explore.

Come say hello and see what you might find!

Violet has been hard at work propagating azaleas this year! Pictured here are more than 100 cultivars, all grown from cuttings taken over the course of the summer. Of these, 40–50 will eventually be new offerings for Bonsai Northwest once they’ve matured and are ready for sale.

Growing plants from cuttings takes time and careful attention, but it allows us to continue expanding our selection with a wide variety of unique cultivars. We’re excited to have so many varieties in the works and look forward to sharing them with the Puget Sound bonsai community in the years to come!

Part 3 of our 13-part short video series.

It’s a question we get often: what’s a good “beginner bonsai?” Short answer: choose the tree that calls to you and learn how to care for it, where you live.

As always, we welcome dialogue, questions and comments!

Turning straight nursery stock into pre-bonsai with character.

One of the advantages of buying material from a bonsai-focused nursery is the opportunity to find trees with movement and character already developing in their trunks. As fall approaches, we’re working through our younger material, selecting branches and applying heavier-gauge wire to introduce interesting, irregular movement into otherwise straight trunks.

This kind of early development, repeated at the appropriate time and season over several years, helps create more compelling, natural-looking bonsai down the road while giving each tree a stronger foundation for its future design.

The real challenge is avoiding repetitive bends and predictable patterns as we shape each trunk. The flexibility in these young shore pines offered plenty of possibilities, allowing us to create a range of forms—from gently undulating uprights to tightly bent cascades.

We’ll continue sharing before-and-after transformations as we work through more of our conifers and deciduous material. And if you’re visiting the nursery, stop by the workshop. You’ll likely find one of us turning straight, ordinary nursery stock into something with a little more character.

Bring out the bonsai hidden in your plant material! Join us this Sunday for our Bring-Your-Own-Tree Workshop! 🌳

Ever look at a tree and wonder how to bring out its potential? Bring it to class! Our in-house professional, Cory Sutton, will work with you to identify your tree’s strongest features, explore design possibilities, and develop a plan for pruning, styling, and wiring.

Whether you're starting with nursery stock, developing pre-bonsai, or looking for a fresh perspective on a tree already in your collection, this is an opportunity to learn by doing, with personalized guidance tailored to your material. Along the way, we'll cover wiring fundamentals and explore some of the artistic principles behind bonsai design.
With just 6 students per class, everyone gets plenty of one-on-one instruction and time to ask questions. Aluminum wire is provided, and copper wire can be brought from home or purchased at the nursery if your tree requires it.

The workshop is this Sunday, October 18, and costs $175. Come with a tree and leave with new skills, fresh ideas, and a clearer vision for its future.

Part 2 of the 13-part series we created for some educational material. Watering may be the most important part of cultivating bonsai, that needs to be mastered by each practitioner.

It’s been a busy week already here at the nursery! Last Saturday, Cory taught a fantastic and well received Beginner class.

Monday, Jay packed and shipped all the azaleas that were purchased over the summer, that had been waiting for cooler weather and temperatures around the country.

We have also been participating in the Facebook Bonsai Auctions this week and listed a handful of trees there.

This Sunday, October 11th, we have friend of the nursery, Tony Fajarillo, coming in to teach the Beginner class.

There are still available spots in the upcoming Beginner classes, along with the Bring Your Own Tree workshop with Cory on October 18th and the Saikei class with Kerri Bailey on November 15th.
