Second Intention Farm

We are a small organic family farm in rural Middle Tennessee where we grow non-GMO corn and native fruits. We're also the future home of Engineered Spirits.

The weather's been a little strange this year , so it's uplifting to see something you planted thriving in spite of it. This Late Purple Aster we planted in one of the Hugelkultur beds is huge, beautiful and a powerful magnet to hundreds of native bees and butterflies! What a joy!

With the tractor on idle and the belt between it and the mill perfectly lined up, it's full speed ahead. We have about 36 five-gallon buckets of to turn into cornmeal today!

The antique hammer mill we use for milling our corn is powered by a long belt that runs around the PTO of a vintage tractor. But, to keep the belt on the spool, the mill must be sitting perfectly square with the tractor. Luckily, our family is here to make sure everything’s running exactly the way it's supposed to!

Granny planted all kinds of flowers , but sometimes it takes us a while to rediscover them! We knew she'd planted Red Spider Lilies in front of the farmhouse, but we had no idea until just recently that she'd also planted some in her vegetable garden at the edge of the forest! What a beautiful surprise!

We already had two species of native clematis growing wild , so three years ago we added two more that are native to our ecoregion. Since those have thrived since we planted them, we're planting another species here today. Alabama Leatherflower prefers sandstone outcrops with a low PH. This spot on the ridge should provide that quite well.

What an experience for all the kids!

The unmistakable purple berries of American Beautyberry make them one of our most striking shrubs in Autumn and we celebrate every time we discover more of them . We harvest some of the berries to make jams and jellies, but most we leave for the wildlife to enjoy, since many different birds, mammals and insects eat them.

Chip is rapidly becoming an old hand at using the farm's backhoe, but it's going to be a long day of digging to get these trenches finished for the new water lines. It'll be worth it though, to not have to worry about another busted pipe !

We posted a while back about how we obtained the seeds for the Orange Cosmos we planted . What we didn't mention is how much pollinating insects LOVE this plant - and here's the proof. This is the prettiest, happiest-looking Monarch butterfly we have ever seen!

We've made great progress on the subfloors farmhouse bathroom today! Here's how it all went down.
