Did Victorian mourning come with a dress code?

A strict one. Widows moved through three stages: Full Mourning in matte black crepe and veils, Second Mourning with more fabric variety, and Half-Mourning, when muted color and lighter trim were allowed back in. Queen Victoria mourned Prince Albert for decades after his 1861 death, shaping mourning wear for generations.
