Architecture can be a powerful teacher. In 2015, we completed the Friends School of Portland, a net-zero building rooted in the Quaker principles of peace, inquiry, simplicity, and stewardship. We integrated the space deeply with the natural landscape using indigenous materials and strong outdoor connections. But the biggest achievement? It became the very first school in Maine - and only the third in the nation - to achieve Passive House certification. Today, the building serves as a living, breathing example for the kids who walk its halls that the way we build can actually help solve climate change.

Uprise Retreat, a custom new home on the shores of Sebago Lake, is now live on the website!

This contemporary cabin shares a camp property with a larger, primary residence - designed by John Calvin Stevens - and another traditional New England bunk house. In the summer, both buildings fill with family, making privacy difficult to come by. The owners decided to introduce a new structure, built in the footprint of an outbuilding that was damaged in a winter storm, to provide them with their own cozy retreat at the end of an action-packed day. The simple floorplan features a bedroom, bathroom, and open kitchen and living area with a floating, circular woodstove by Focus Fireplaces to rival the comfort of a campfire.

The leaves are changing and acorns are dropping... with the exception of this Acorn Deck House, which has certainly changed but is now elevated in performance and aesthetic thanks to a deep energy retrofit and renovation.

A renovation takes something old and makes it look and feel new. The original form and function are preserved, but presentation and livability are updated for modern tastes and needs. Mid-century modern homes are among most architects’ favorite gems to refresh and restore; think expansive walls of glass, post-and-beam-construction, and soaring ceilings that just need dated floor plans or finishes brought into the 21st century.

Acorn Deck Houses, a Massachusetts-based company founded in 1947, designed and produced some of the first pre-fabricated MCM homes on the market. Their process proposed an alternative to traditional building methods that generated less waste and repurposed materials left over from World War II industries.

In 2020, our clients purchased a lakeside Acorn Deck House to serve as a multigenerational gathering space. The project began as a tear-down and rebuild; the existing home was less than forty years old but suffered from complex issues with moisture and insulation. Dark timber interiors, a cramped kitchen, and a layout defined by numerous structural columns made interior spaces feel low and narrow with seemingly few options for restructuring. During early design discussions, the owners reconsidered demolition only if the home could be meaningfully opened up without lowering the ceiling anywhere.

Essentially, we were asked to make a house levitate. So we did.

Remember that radical 2008 experiment, the BrightBuilt Barn? By 2013, the momentum was undeniable. We realized the world didn’t just need one offsite-fabricated, net-zero home—it needed a whole system for them. So, we launched a new division: BrightBuilt Home. It grew so fast that it spun off into its own standalone company in 2015. Since its launch, BrightBuilt Home has designed an incredible 365 high-performance homes, all while staying true to its core mission: delivering net-zero, sustainably built homes through a simply guided process.

The Lewiston Choice Wedgewood Neighborhood has received an AIA New England Merit Award for Design Excellence! Choice Wedgewood is an 82-unit, mixed-income community in Lewiston’s Tree Street neighborhood and the first completed phase of the City’s Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan. The project spans 14 assembled parcels and includes nine buildings ranging from neighborhood-scale apartment houses to the meticulous rehabilitation of the 1873 Dr. Milton Wedgewood House.

The development’s new construction draws architectural inspiration from the Wedgewood House and surrounding triple decker housing. Six midblock buildings contain 8–9 units and mimic the scale of nearby single-family homes by breaking larger structures into primary gables with conjoined, flat-roofed “saddlebags”. Two 12-unit corner buildings reinterpret the mansard roofs and turreted forms that traditionally anchor Lewiston’s prominent intersections.

Delivered through a deeply collaborative, multi-party process, Wedgewood represents a landmark project integrating historic preservation, affordability, sustainability, and community-led revitalization in a small city context.

Congratulations to our clients, Avesta Housing and Lewiston Housing Authority!

In 2012, we took on our very first restaurant project - and took home an AIA Maine Merit Award for it! Designed for a critically acclaimed menu that needed a larger space, the goal was to create an "island of serenity" in a busy neighborhood. We tackled the messy reality of a commercial space with creative problem-solving: a custom CNC-milled birch plywood ceiling that feels like a forest canopy, acoustic back-lit textiles, and a stunning 100-year-old reclaimed pickle barrel wood bar top built by local craftsmen.

A great renovation sees the potential of an existing building and highlights its best moments: a soaring ceiling, an interesting geometry, exposed structure. At Eagle Crest, we saw past dated finishes, unnecessary dividing walls, and clunky built-ins and knew this mid-century modern Acorn deck house was an icon just waiting to be revealed. We added breathing room to an unused space and re-activated it as the sunniest, coziest spot in the house for getting together and hanging out.

In 2011, Jesse Thompson made local history by becoming the very first Certified Passive House Consultant in northern New England. Earning this certification wasn't just about adding letters after his name; it was a stake in the ground for the future of hyper-efficient, ultra-low energy design in our cold-climate region. The local business community took notice of that leadership, too, with Jesse taking home a MaineBiz 40 Under 40 award that same year.

It's not too late to register for retrofitMAINE's 2nd Annual Retrofit Symposium, happening Friday, September 25th in Brunswick. This year's theme is "Retrofit Policy is Housing Policy" and two of our Architects - Katie Braddock-La Rose and Meg Bunke - will be sharing a case study on a deep energy retrofit of a historic farmhouse. "Tightest Single Family Gut Renovation to Date" explores our partnership with Warren Construction and Lord Building Solutions and success in achieving a 0.11 ACH50 for the project.
