Everybody wants a green privacy wall. Nobody thinks about what the roots are doing to the block wall behind it.

This yard has a row of ficus planted right along the wall. They got dense, the roots are growing up into it, and the wall is already cracked in a few spots. On top of that, the leaves get huge and they're all over the place.

We're trimming them all the way back. My advice: don't plant these next to your wall, or I'll be the one coming out to tear them out.

Cheap pavers don't always look bad. They just never look right.

This driveway honestly isn't terrible. A couple low spots. But whoever put it in didn't blend the pavers at all, so the colors are all over the place. The pieces fit differently, and it's also the cheapest paver.

That's what the $10-a-square-foot guys don't think about.

So we're tearing it all up and starting over. Brand new three-piece pattern, one blend, one dye lot. Doing it right.

Be honest: would you have noticed the color difference before someone pointed it out?

Everyone assumes the expensive option is the better option. Not always.

On this yard we looked at all three: concrete pavers, natural stone, and porcelain. We went with concrete pavers.

They're durable, they're proven in Arizona, they're the most cost-effective, and honestly they'll last longer and need less maintenance than porcelain. Natural stone and porcelain have their place. But upgrading your yard doesn't mean you have to go high-end.

The one rule: don't go with the cheapest pavers. A good paver is the difference.

Everybody's designing their backyard with AI now. Some of those designs are great ideas. Some can't physically exist.

Shelves floating in mid-air. A massive pergola that's somehow supposed to stand for 20 years.

AI is a great tool. It's there to help you. But it doesn't contract, it doesn't build, and if something goes wrong, it's not helping you with a warranty.

That's our job.

Nobody likes finding out a plant is in the wrong spot after it’s in the ground.

Here’s what I do before anything gets dug.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. Straight rows look like a parking lot. Odd spacing looks natural.
𝗠𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. Pots go down and boulders get marked out before a single hole gets dug.
𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀. A sketch looks good. Standing in the yard is the real test.
𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻. Once the roots are in, you don’t get a free redo.

Do Details Matter?

This is something that is PURELY cosmetic, just alternating the pattern of the 12x24 gives the steps alot of little “POP” that is noticed when walking on them.

Are these sort of details something YOU care about? Or are we just making ourselves happy!?

Most homeowners blame the turf. Most of the time, it's the install.

When we tear turf out, it's usually one of three things: bad installation, bad material, or bad drainage.

This yard? Material was actually decent. The install was a crap job. Pieces this big seamed together, nothing leveled, and it was buckling all over the place. Somebody got paid to do this.

So we pulled it all out and we're doing it right.
