Every remarkable rose begins long before it blooms. It begins in the soil.

Beneath every field at Francis Roses lives a community too small to see, countless organisms that together form the soil microbiome. Their health shapes the health of every rose above them, so we tend to the soil with the same patience we give the roses themselves.

Acreage not in active rose production is never simply left behind. It is enrolled in established soil-conservation practices and rotated with cover crops, which are returned to the earth as green manure. The ground rests, feeds, and rebuilds.

For us, sustainability begins here, in keeping the land capable of growing roses for generations to come.

A rose outlives the hand that plants it. So should the soil it grows in.

Some roses are bred for a moment. Others carry a legacy.

For generations, Georges Delbard has been part of the great tradition of French rose breeding. From Malicorne, the house has created roses with a character distinctly its own, where beauty, fragrance and performance are considered together.

PONT DES ARTS™ carries that tradition forward.

Named for the celebrated bridge spanning the Seine in Paris, the Pont des Arts became known around the world as a place where lovers left locks as symbols of a love meant to endure.

There is something fitting about the name.

Deep crimson blooms unfold into densely layered, almost old-world forms, each flower developing its own character as it opens. Its fragrance is extraordinary, rich, enveloping and unmistakably French…yet beneath all that romance is a remarkably resistant modern rose.

We think of roses like this as legacy roses. Roses whose beauty may be rooted in the past, but whose performance gives them a place in the future. Roses worthy of being grown, remembered and passed from one generation of gardeners to the next.

A rose named for enduring love, from a breeding house whose own legacy has endured for generations.

Some roses seem to hold light within them.

For more than a century, Rosen Tantau has been breeding roses in Uetersen, Germany. Founded in 1906, the house has become one of the great names in modern rose breeding, built on generations of selection and an enduring pursuit of better roses.

INKANDESZENZ™ is a beautiful expression of that work.

A Hybrid Tea of luminous white, its flowers open with a warm cream center that seems to glow from within. As the bloom develops, the petals soften toward white, creating a remarkable sense of depth and light.

But its beauty is only part of the story.

INKANDESZENZ™ combines its large, classically formed flowers with a strong fragrance and the garden performance required of a modern rose.

These are the roses that hold our attention, not simply because they are beautiful, but because they bring multiple qualities together in a single plant.

More than a century after Rosen Tantau began breeding roses in northern Germany, that pursuit continues.

The rarest roses are not defined by a single trait.

Just outside Lyon, the Orard family has been breeding roses since 1930. Nearly a century later, that work continues through Pierre and Jean-Charles Orard, together with Laurence Orard.

It is a small breeding house by global standards, driven by an extraordinary passion for the rose. Over generations, Roses Orard has introduced numerous varieties to American gardens, pursuing the difficult combination of beauty, fragrance and performance.

Their latest introduction with us is Maison Rouge™.

An exceptional red Hybrid Tea is remarkably difficult to achieve. Maison Rouge™ brings together rich, saturated red color, good disease resistance and an unmistakably French fragrance.

Its distinctive, sculpted center opens slowly to reveal more than 50 petals, becoming gently ruffled as the flower matures while retaining an elegant form.

We look for roses where no single characteristic carries the whole. Form. Fragrance. Color. Performance. When they come together, something exceptional emerges.

Every rose deserves a fair trial.

These three selections were bred with passion by American hybridizer Frank Gatto. Now, they begin the next chapter of their journey through our evaluation program.

Their first test will take place in our Arizona rose fields, where they will be evaluated under demanding growing conditions. Selections that demonstrate promise will advance to container trials at our San Luis Obispo facility, alongside garden trials in Texas and Vermont.

This process takes years…and it should.

Trialing roses has always been a foundation of our work. A beautiful flower is only the beginning. We evaluate the complete plant: vigor, disease tolerance, repeat bloom, habit, climate adaptability and, ultimately, its ability to perform in a gardener’s hands.

Our trials include genetics from some of the world’s largest breeding houses as well as independent hybridizers like Frank. The name behind the rose does not change the standard. Every selection earns its place on the same field, under the same evaluation criteria.

That level playing field matters. Because in the end, this isn’t about who bred the rose.

It’s about the rose and the gardener who will one day grow it.

Francis Roses maintains one of the most expansive collections of rose genetics in North America, evaluated across multiple climates with a singular objective: identifying exceptional roses worthy of gardens across the United States and Canada.

Some roses wait years to be discovered.

This unnamed variety was bred in 2014 by American rose hybridizer Frank Gatto and has never been commercially released.

After a career as an engineer with the United States Navy, Frank found a second calling in roses, establishing a small nursery in Gig Harbor, Washington, and dedicating himself to the art of hybridization.

We first came to know Frank through our shared passion for roses, a passion that quickly became friendship. Today, we have the privilege of preserving, growing and evaluating selections from his breeding work, including this remarkable rose.

Frank is also the hybridizer behind Ember Room, which we were honored to introduce through April & Ashley

We exist in part for roses like this: to preserve important genetics, document the work of breeders, and ensure that exceptional roses, and the stories of the people who created them, are not lost.

A rose is not simply made.
It is chosen.
Cut. Joined. Trusted to heal.
In grafting, the hand makes a wound with purpose. The selected variety is placed against the rootstock with precision, and then nature does what only nature can do: it stitches the two together.
Each team grafts thousands of plants a day, yet every cut still matters. Every scion must be placed correctly. Every union must be clean. Every plant must be given the chance to become what it was selected to be.
This is precision at a scale rarely seen in roses.
More than propagation, it is a quiet collaboration between human skill and the living intelligence of the plant.
Craftsmanship. Patience. Creation.

A study in form and variation.
What makes a rose recognizable?
Perhaps it is not one familiar silhouette. Cupped, quartered, spiraled or open…each bloom presents a different expression of the same flower.
The rose is not one form.
It is the possibility of many.

A study in form and beauty.
What do we admire in a rose?
Perhaps it is not one perfect shape, but its ability to become many, folded, open, sculptural, delicate, each form offering a different expression of beauty.
White does not simplify the rose. It clarifies it. Color recedes, and form is revealed.

The next generation is never created by following the last.

Since 1962, four generations of the Ilsink family have devoted themselves to imagining what a rose might become. What began in a 50-square-meter greenhouse in the Netherlands grew into one of the world’s most influential breeding programs, pioneering the modern spray rose and continually reshaping the possibilities of color, form and performance.

That spirit can be seen in Explorer®. Its deep red color, commanding form and vase life of approximately 15 to 18 days have made it an increasingly important variety among growers and floral professionals in Ecuador and Colombia. It is a rose created not only to make an impression, but to sustain one.

Yet perhaps Interplant’s greatest distinction is its refusal to accept a familiar shape as the final expression of a rose.

From the sculptural character of Trendsetter® and Flow®, to the remarkable ruffled genetics behind the ® collection, Interplant has spent decades developing forms the market had not yet learned to request. The ruffled trait itself was first identified in 1990 and patiently refined for years before entering its cut-flower breeding program.

Their innovation reaches into the garden as well, where the Babylon Eyes® family carries the distinctive central eye inherited from Rosa persica, genetics that appear almost painted by hand.

We recognize what stands behind these creations: generations of observation, disappointment, perseverance and imagination. A lifetime of dedication invested not merely in producing another rose, but in expanding what a rose can be.

Interplant’s words are more than a signature.

We create the next generation.

They are a promise, renewed with every cross.
