Plenty of the live oaks shading Central Florida streets were already giants when Kevin's Tree Service started in 1987.

That's 39 years of working under, around and up in trees like these. A lot has changed since then. The equipment is bigger, the climbing gear is better, and the industry now has real pruning standards (we follow ANSI A300). Since 2016 the company has been owned by David Grantz, and it's still a family business.

What hasn't changed is the job itself: keep the trees people love healthy, take down the ones that have become a risk, and treat every yard like someone lives there. Because someone does.

Every crew has someone who has to climb on the biggest piece for the photo.

To be fair, it's earned. A trunk this size doesn't come down in one piece, and it definitely doesn't come down by luck. It comes down in planned sections, each cut sized for what the rigging and equipment can safely handle, so every piece lands exactly where the crew wants it.

A lot of careful work, a yard full of wood, and one crew member standing on top like they just summited something.

We let them have this one.

Trees have never once checked our business hours before falling over.

So our phones don't keep business hours either. Call 407-971-7714 at 2 PM on a Tuesday or 2 AM on a Sunday and a real person picks up.

We won't pretend a crew can roll out at 2 AM. Nobody should be running a chainsaw in the dark next to a power line. But you'll get a straight answer on what to do right now, what to stay away from, and when we can get eyes on it.

That's worth a lot when there's a tree across the driveway and you were planning to leave for work in four hours.

Before anyone climbs your tree, ask them for two pieces of paper.

The first is a general liability certificate. That's what covers your house, fence or car if something goes wrong.

The second is the one people forget: workers' compensation. Tree work is one of the most dangerous trades there is, and if someone without coverage gets hurt on your property, you don't want to be the one figuring out who pays.

Pieces like these are why it matters. A trunk section this size doesn't care whose name is on the contract.

Meet our freshly wrapped estimate car. Before any crew, crane or chipper shows up, this is what pulls up first. We walk the property, look at the trees you're worried about, and give you a straight answer on what they actually need. Sometimes that's a removal. Sometimes it's a trim. Sometimes it's "that tree's fine, leave it alone."

Ever wonder how a tree comes down without anyone climbing it?

Our grapple saw truck sets up out front, and the operator runs it by remote from the ground. The boom reaches into the canopy, the grapple locks onto a section, the built-in saw makes the cut, and the crane carries the piece over the fence and sets it down right at the chipper. Piece by piece, top to bottom, with nothing free-falling into the yard.

It's the newest machine in our fleet. It doesn't replace our climbers, but on the right tree it means less risk for the crew and less mess for the homeowner.

Remember the claw machine at the arcade? The one that never actually grabbed anything?

This is the version that always wins.

Our green debris grapple truck picks up logs that would take a whole crew (and a few backs) to move by hand, and sets them in the bed instead of rolling them across your lawn. Fewer trips across the yard, less wear on the grass, and nobody has to pretend a log that size is "not that bad."

No quarters required.

Everyone says AI is coming for our jobs. So we wrote it a job posting.

NOW HIRING: TREE CLIMBER

Must be able to:
• Show up at 7 AM. Boots on, saw fueled.
• Climb a 50-foot oak in August. In Florida.
• Rig heavy limbs without taking out the customer's pool screen.
• Remain calm when discovering a wasp nest 50 feet off the ground.
• Bring your own lunch.

AI asked if the position was remote.

We haven't heard back since.

Fortunately, our guys aren't too worried about being replaced.

There's a reason we rely on experienced climbers, skilled groundsmen, and professional equipment operators. Some jobs still require real people who know exactly what they're doing.
