Door swings in a room can be a pain for the long term for our clients, so we work through in person the flow of how things are coming together on site. Thinking about the flow of traffic through a door can change your door order package and save the client a lot of head ache in the future.

First off, huge shout out to Shane from PATRIOT High Performance Homes. He did a post on this setup in a 2x6 wall with some 1 1/8” advantech and we’ve started implementing this into our projects and love it! A few details to figure out to help make this an ideal setup for a client long term, but we’ve loved learning from Shane and his expertise! If you don’t already, go follow him for some awesome content!!

Pocket doors are awesome for so many situations and there are tons of products on the market to help homeowners have a better experience with them. Because lots of our clients would rather not drop $1000+ on a pocket door kit, plus a door, plus install, these site built kits are a huge value add for a client without cheaping out on a Home Depot special. Some great hardware with some forethought for the long run.

Doing the second story additions with the post and beam system creates a new crawl space that gives us some extra height for mechanicals and the ability to crawl between the old and the new while connecting all of our MEPs. This crawl space uncouples the floor and the ceiling so it creates a super quiet floor system

We are just getting ready to frame the stair opening. Most of the old roof trusses are out and we have a few we need to sister up after we set the 3-ply LVL that spans the opening in the video. That LVL beam will bear the load of the trimmable floor trusses that will finish the floor.

Separating the construction area from the living area is super important to us and the beam and brackets are what make that possible. Creates a super quiet floor structure as well so you can throw a party upstairs and be sleeping downstairs 😅

Starting to remove the roof on the old home after finishing the walls and the new roof of the second story addition. We cut out the trusses and then will sister up the bottom cord of the old trusses to the new floor trusses so the drywall of the ceiling stays in tact and the homeowners can stay living in the main portion of the home.

When we build a second story addition, we can increase the energy efficiency of the new upstairs floor without causing major damage to the main floor walls. We can get rebates from the gas and power company for certain upgrades we do and help homeowners work through that during pre construction.

We love using floor trusses on our projects and when building a second story, we hang the trusses off of the beam structure we have going around the bottom of the new walls. Pulling out the old roof to install the new trusses works great at this point!

Got the new roof and walls up, removed the old roof deck and we are ready to start putting in the new floor trusses.

The house jack system that we use to support the beam structure for the second story addition system helps to keep the house from needing to be completely opened up and supports the new walls, new floor, and new roof during construction until a pony wall infills the gap between the top plate of the existing house and the new beam structure.
