“Can I change the color of my hardwood without replacing it?” 🤔
In many cases, YES! If you love having hardwood but don’t love the color, refinishing could give your existing floors a whole new look!!
Sanding removes the old finish and stain, revealing the wood underneath. From there, we can apply a different stain or keep the wood’s natural color and add a protective finish. Going from dark to lighter may be possible, too!
So, what determines whether your floors can be sanded?
🪵The type of flooring
Solid hardwood can often be refinished multiple times. Some engineered hardwood can also be sanded, but it depends on the thickness of its real-wood surface layer. Not all engineered floors are thick enough.
📏How much sandable wood remains
Previous sanding matters. We need enough wood remaining to refinish safely—even solid hardwood can eventually become too thin.
🔎The condition of the floor
Deep stains, damaged boards, and uneven areas can affect what’s possible. Some spots may need board repairs or replacement before refinishing.
🎨The wood itself
Sanding changes the surface, but it doesn’t change the wood species or grain. Its natural undertones influence the final color, which is why seeing samples on your actual floor is so helpful.
And “natural” doesn’t mean unfinished! Your floor still gets a protective finish to help it handle everyday life.
Before you count your floors out, let’s see what’s hiding underneath!
