This financial firm’s office looks nothing like you expected.

That’s because we design first impressions to be a part of the floor plan.

Reception is often the first real interaction someone has with an office, so we designed this one to do more than check people in. The custom designed desk in deep Lyon’s blue gives the entry a strong focal point, while its carefully considered scale keeps movement through the space feeling natural. It sets the tone for the experience that follows, before a meeting has even begun.

And we didn’t just play it safe.

Rather than defaulting to rows of chairs around a table for the main boardroom, we introduced bleacher seating to give the whole team another way to come together. The result is a room that can accommodate larger gatherings while offering visiting clients a different perspective on the business. For us, good workplace design considers not only how a team works, but how clients and guests interpret the culture behind the business.

POV your office has a better kitchen than your apartment.

And yes, you can actually cook here. This Food52 HQ kitchen was made with everything you need to cook a proper lunch, instead of eating whatever’s at the bottom of your bag.

You’ll even find long communal tables and multiple dining areas to give everyone the chance to sit down, share a meal and step away from their desks.

At this New Jersey residence, the connection between the gardens and the interiors goes beyond the view. Landscape designer Hadley Peterson’s love of green shaped a palette of smoky tones and crisp whites, bringing a fresh perspective to the home’s traditional architecture. Collected objects and contemporary furnishings add contrast, while the garden offers a changing backdrop that subtly shifts the feel of the rooms throughout the year.

This residential design project began as two separate apartments in Greenwich Village, which gave us an opportunity to reconsider how the home could function as a whole. After a year of construction, we brought the 1,500-square-foot apartment together around a more open, connected living and dining area, creating room to host friends and family without losing the feeling of a private retreat from the pace of New York.

In a city where space is always at a premium, knowing what to prioritize can make all the difference.

A good chair has to do more than look the part.

At Schumacher’s Soho headquarters, we considered how each workspace supports the way people actually work, from focused tasks to more informal moments throughout the day. We recently shared some of our favourite task chairs as well as seating selections for communal workspaces, libraries and dining halls that we keep coming back to.

Find out exactly what we look for when selecting the right chair, and see our proprietary list of workplace seating in Brad’s latest article. You can tap on the link in our bio to read Sightlines on Substack.

For this 1930s Colonial in Bloomfield Hills, we wanted the interiors to feel as personal as the people living in them.

The family brought a collection of cherished objects and collectibles to the project, which became part of a much broader mix of vintage, contemporary and custom pieces. Rather than creating rooms that overly curated, we embraced a little more personality and play to create a home that could accommodate family life without losing its design point of view.

“Their love of objects makes this a special project, and also their trust in me. There were a couple of things they brought from New York, and heritage pieces that work with the home’s core. It was a total mix. At the end of the day, we chose things that they love.” — Brad Sherman, Co-founder, Float Studio

The design of this space started with one question: how do you make a small footprint work harder without losing the reason people come into the office in the first place?

The focus became seating and sightlines. The client wanted a space that encouraged internal collaboration and learning, so we introduced a soft seating area for presentations and internal sessions, alongside desks for ten.

Rather than separating the two functions, we combined them. There was an early concern that orienting the desks inward might feel overly observed. But Sahil, the founder, had a clear perspective: if people are coming into the office, it should be to see and hear one another. This layout leans into that idea. Plus, everyone at their desk has a clear vantage point to the seating area, so those pieces double as additional seating when the team gathers.

We’ve rounded up the chairs we keep specifying at Float Studio, from full-day task chairs to pieces for conference rooms, libraries and breakout spaces. We’re sharing exactly what we look for and how we put them to the test featuring our favorites from Vitra Herman Miller Hem Humanscale Audo Copenhagen CARL HANSEN & SØN and others.

“A good looking office chair used to be surprisingly difficult to find. For years, the category was dominated by highly technical chairs designed with a distinctly commercial appearance. They did what they were supposed to, but they rarely contributed anything to the aesthetics of a room. At my New York design studio, Float Studio, we have always been interested in finding the point where those two things meet, where a chair can support someone through a full 8 hour workday while still feeling like a considered piece of furniture.”

We approached the kitchen of our financial firm project in NoMad more like a hospitality space, giving it the scale, materiality and comfort to support everything from everyday use to larger gatherings.

The hand-fired tile, generous island and integrated pantry give it a strong presence within the office, while the lounge area makes the transition from work to gathering feel natural.

The kitchen sits between the more formal client-facing meeting rooms and the everyday working areas of the team, making it a natural threshold.

Designing a space for FS&CO’s in SoHo really meant one thing: pattern. This conference room, one of three uniquely designed spaces, features their Caterpillar Leaf wallpaper in black and cream as a natural way to pull the brand into the visual language of the space without creating a showroom. Paired with a sculptural marble Dolmen table by Cappellini and the room has enough presence for hosting clients while still feeling comfortable for everyday meetings with the team.
