For five decades, DOROT has worked to alleviate social isolation and loneliness among older adults, foster meaningful connections across generations and build a world in which aging is supported with dignity, respect and community. This gala is a celebration of all that has made that work possible and all that lies ahead. We hope you will join us for this meaningful celebration and help ensure DOROT’s work continues to thrive for generations to come.

The gala will honor Robert S. Tucker, 35th Fire Commissioner of the City of New York. Please join Master of Ceremonies David Price, Weather Anchor — WNBC and Gala Co-Chairs Elyssa Friedland, Jennifer Perkins and Josh Targoff for this very special evening.

Celebrate with us on November 10 at the American Museum of Natural History as we honor Robert and recognize the generations of older adults and volunteers who have been at the heart of DOROT's mission for half a century.

Something to remember on this Ageism Awareness Day: when we get to know people of different ages, stereotypes give way to understanding and genuine connection.

In a new impact report, feedback from teens and college students in our intergenerational programs shows a clear change in attitudes toward older adults. The intergenerational relationships formed at DOROT helped participants bridge their differences in years and rethink assumptions about growing older.

Both younger and older generations reported greater awareness of the benefits of intergenerational relationships. They described their relationships as reciprocal, where both generations give and receive.

Our programs intentionally upend the idea that younger people are volunteers and older adults are simply recipients. Everyone acts in service to each other and to the intergenerational community they build.

For artist Amy Tenenouser, making art is a powerful way to build community.

At her Painting & Collage workshop, the session began with introductions, giving participants a chance to get to know one another before creating. At the end of the class, everyone gathered to share their work.

“When everyone in the class sees everybody else’s work, that is usually a big moment,” says Tenenouser. “They learn from that. They see different ideas. They get excited. And I feel that really starts to build a sense of community. The more we meet, the more that community grows.”

Through programs like this, DOROT creates opportunities for older adults to learn something new, express themselves creatively, and build meaningful connections.

Alongside Anthony "Tony" Matos, he has built trusted relationships with older adults who look forward to their visits each week.
