The math doesn't work.

You FEED birds: 5 lbs of sunflower seed per month. 15 species visit. You love watching them. You post photos. You feel like you're helping.

Your cat KILLS birds: 40-70 native animals per year (birds, chipmunks, lizards, frogs, snakes). Studies show: a fed cat kills at the SAME rate as a feral cat. The full belly doesn't suppress the hunting instinct. Your well-fed cat is a well-fueled predator.

Net effect: your yard is a trap. Birds are ATTRACTED by the feeder — then killed by the cat.

You're running bait and ambush. And you don't even know it.

The cat is not evil. The cat is a cat. YOU are the one who put a feeder 30 feet from an apex predator.

Keep the feeder. Keep the cat. Keep the cat INSIDE.

It's not complicated. It's just inconvenient.

Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford' — the worst landscaping decision in American history.

THE SMELL: The white spring flowers smell like rotting fish. Not subtle. ROTTING FISH.

THE STRUCTURE: Branches grow at narrow angles from the trunk → structurally WEAK. Bradford pears split in half during storms, ice events, or strong winds. Average lifespan before catastrophic failure: 15-25 years.

THE INVASION: Birds eat the small fruits and deposit seeds everywhere. The seedlings revert to THORNY, aggressive wild-type Callery pear — 3-inch thorns, impenetrable thickets that choke out native forest understory. Classified as INVASIVE in 25+ states. Some states have BANNED sales.

THE ECOLOGY: Supports near-ZERO native caterpillar species. A biological desert disguised as a tree.

THE ALTERNATIVE: Serviceberry (Amelanchier) — native, white flowers, edible berries, feeds 40+ bird species, beautiful fall color, doesn't split, doesn't stink, doesn't invade. Same size. Same flower timing. 100× more value. Replace every Bradford pear with a serviceberry.
