We just wrapped a wood fence restoration at a Des Plaines home that involved a lot more than a single coat of stain. Multiple cedar assemblies — privacy walls, garden boxes, and an access fence — plus newly installed treated pine framing all needed prep and a two-tone Benjamin Moore Woodluxe Solid Stain finish. White Standard 0-1 on the framing and cap boards, Mahogany ES-60 on the cedar panels, rails, and pine framing — keeping those color transitions clean took careful masking throughout. We just wrapped a structural repair and sealing project on a 760-square-foot deck in Lake Forest. Years of freeze-thaw cycles had worked through the floor boards, stair treads, risers, skirting, and built-in benches — two of the 2x6 boards had deteriorated past the point of saving, so we replaced them before sanding all horizontal surfaces and applying a coat of Rymar Xtreme Weather Sealer. Every accessible surface got covered, and the deck is ready to handle whatever the next few seasons bring. We just wrapped a structural deck refinish in Downers Grove on a 215-square-foot deck that needed a lot more than a quick coat of stain. The homeowner wanted a two-tone finish — Benjamin Moore Woodluxe solid stain in Stock White on the verticals, and Rymar semi-transparent Hickory Bark on the floor, treads, and support structure. Getting that transition between the two colors clean took careful masking and cut-in work across every seam. This is the part everyone waits for. đź‘€

After all the cleaning, prep work, and finishing, you finally get to see the difference.

And sometimes, the best part of restoring a deck is realizing you didn't have to start over with a brand-new one.

Have a deck that's seen better days? We'd be happy to take a look.

The final coat of stain is usually the most satisfying part to watch. But there's a lot of work before we get there.

Cleaning, removing failing finishes, sanding, and replacing damaged boards when needed, every step depends on the condition of the deck.

That's why two decks can look similar at first but need completely different amounts of preparation.

Thinking about restoring yours? Let's see what it actually needs.

We just wrapped a full deck restoration on a 420-square-foot deck in Palatine. Years of hard winters and hot summers had opened up the wood across the floor, railings, stair treads, risers, skirting, and planters — so we power washed, sanded every horizontal surface, and applied one coat of Rymar Xtreme Weather oil-based semi-transparent sealer throughout. The job also includes an 18-month inspection and maintenance cleaning window, so the work holds up long after we leave. We just wrapped up structural deck repairs on a 650-square-foot rooftop deck in Chicago. Six deteriorated pressure-treated pine boards were replaced, the entire surface was power washed and sanded, and one coat of Rymar Xtreme Weather Sealer went down to get the wood shedding water again instead of absorbing it. Rooftop jobs take extra coordination, and this client had everything lined up perfectly — interior access, water, power, and neighbors notified. A good deck restoration takes more than a pressure washer and a can of stain.

There's a crew behind every project, handling the prep, repairs, and all those little details that make a difference in the finished result.

And while the before-and-after photos get most of the attention, the people doing the work deserve some credit too.

We just wrapped a wood fence restoration on the north side of Chicago — 1,225 linear feet surrounding a home's backyard. After power washing and letting the wood dry out, we applied one coat of TWP 1500 Series oil-based semi-transparent sealer, working through the posts and bracing before moving to the pickets and covering both faces wherever we could reach. The homeowner had cleared access with neighbors ahead of time, which kept the whole day on track. Fence staining isn't just about looks - it's what keeps the wood from cupping, splitting, and rotting out on you. We recently handled a project with 152' x 5' stained on the interior side and a 16' x 5' section done on both sides where the fence gets more sun and rain exposure. We match the approach to how each section actually gets hit by weather. Got a fence that needs the same kind of attention? Happy to take a look.
