Timber Frame HQ https://timberframehq.com - Go from sketch to structure with our Ready-to-Raise™ Timber Frame Kits, Plans, Custom Design & DIY resource hub.

Tag us to be featured. Conceived in the fall of 2010 and was created to educate and bring folks together with a common goal; to spread the word about timber framing and provide a valuable online resource for everyone. We are achieving this goal by providing a showcase of timber frame house plans, a gallery, construction details, and anything else we can think of. All are welcome to submit plans, photos, and articles to the site. I realized early on that this site needed to represent the community of skilled craftsmen that is the timber frame community and we hope that we can help you, the community, and help the trade by building this site. One of our primary goals is to increase the awareness of timber framing so more of them get built.

North Country Public Radio recently visited timber framer Abraham Gadjo at his workshop in Brant Lake to explore the craftsmanship behind traditional timber construction.

Working with heavy timbers, Gadjo uses carefully laid-out joinery, wooden pegs, and tools ranging from chain mortisers to hand chisels. The result is a structure where the timbers fit together like a puzzle.

The article offers a fascinating look at the planning, precision, and woodworking skills that go into creating these connections.

It's Framework Friday! This week we're featuring two in-house projects and two custom designs from our team.

Our in-house projects include a 12x22 timber frame with an impressive 21-foot peak and an 18x36 greenhouse. On the custom side, we're showcasing a multi-gable hybrid residence and a full timber frame two-level home with extensive roof framing.

These four projects demonstrate the variety of structures our design team works on, from smaller specialty buildings to complex residential frames.

A timber pavilion built without scaffolding—and designed to come apart!

Architecture students at the University of Washington created Timber Wave, a 28-foot-long wooden pavilion assembled from interlocking, W-shaped timber modules.

Built in 2025 using Washington-grown Douglas fir and hemlock, the structure rises more than nine feet high. Each section supported the next during assembly, eliminating the need for scaffolding.

The students also used minimal cuts and removable screws so the lumber could eventually be disassembled and reused.

It's a fascinating example of how hands-on construction helps students explore structural design, material efficiency, and creative uses for timber.

Could wooden dowels help change the way we build with timber?

Researchers at UC Berkeley's Wood Lab are exploring dowel-laminated timber, a construction method that joins pieces of lumber into structural panels without adhesives.

Instead of glue, wooden dowels are inserted through drilled holes. As the surrounding wood transfers moisture to the dowels, they expand and help hold the assembly together.

The process can also make use of smaller trees, salvaged lumber, and wood species that might otherwise go unused.

It's an interesting example of how a familiar woodworking principle is finding new applications in modern timber construction.

This knee brace tenon and mortise detail shows a simple, repeatable layout using a 2″ offset from the face and a 2″ thick tenon. The mortise in the tie beam is sized to match, creating a clean and consistent joint.

The connection is secured with a single 1″ peg, helping hold the brace in place while transferring loads through the frame.

23 volunteers, 4 instructors, and 9 days of timber framing in the Catskills!

The Timber Framers Guild recently completed a timber frame fire pavilion at the Blue Deer Center in New York's Catskill Mountains.

The project brought together volunteers and experienced instructors to create a gathering space for the center's community. With nearly perfect fall weather and plenty of teamwork, the crew completed the pavilion in just nine days.

It's another great example of how timber framing brings people together, both during the raising and long after the work is finished.
