Some days need a soft landing.

Mine is the end of the leather sofa, where afternoon light filters through sheer curtains and my feet go straight up. I browse through an actual catalog. My dog cuddled up next to me.

None of it is complicated. Light you can feel. A seat deep enough to sink into. Something slow to turn the pages of. A furry friend.

That’s the corner I look for in every client’s home. When it isn’t there yet, I build it.

Where’s yours? Tell me below.

When you enter a room, your brain decides in 3 seconds: calm or stress?

That reaction has a name: neuroaesthetics, which is the study of how our brain responds to beauty.

Light, color, and texture hit 5 systems at once: emotion, memory, reward, attention, and meaning.

Your home is talking to your brain all day.

Which room in your home drains you fastest? Tell me below — I’ll reply with one tweak to try.

Follow for the science behind rooms that feel good.

I spent a weekend in Vermont and came back with a palette.

Nature puts colors side by side that you’d never think to pair, then makes them look inevitable.
1. Mustard from the trees on the hillside.
2. The soft gray of mist over the mountain.
3. Deep spruce green.
4. Yellow-green grasses along a stone wall.
5. A berry pink I didn’t see coming.

Some of these colors might seem to be an unexpected choice, but nature never gets it wrong. That’s why color placement, balance and combination is key.

What colors would you like to bring into your home?

The clocks change on November 1st, and suddenly the evening starts before dinner does.
The homes that handle that well aren’t the brightest ones. They’re the layered ones.
Most rooms have exactly one light source, mounted in the ceiling, pointing straight down. It’s efficient, it’s unflattering, and it’s why a room can feel cold at five o’clock even when the heat is on.
Here are five things to add before the time change.
1. A table lamp beside where you actually sit, so light reaches your face from the side instead of from above.
2. A floor lamp in the corner you never use. It will make the whole room feel larger after dark.
3. Something low and warm. A small lamp on a console, or candles on the mantel.
4. Warm bulbs, and all of them the same. Mismatched bulbs are the most common thing I find in a room and the easiest thing to fix.
5. A dimmer on whatever overhead you decide to keep.
If your home feels dark and heavy once the sun goes down, I’d love to help you think it through.

Something shifts in October, and most of us feel it before we can name it.
The sun sits lower, the light comes in at a sharper angle, and we lose a few minutes of daylight every single day.
Our bodies notice. We slow down, we want to be indoors, and we start looking for comfort in rooms that felt perfectly fine in July.
Getting ready for the cozy season isn’t about pumpkins and plaid.
It’s about adjusting a room so it meets you where you are for the next five months.
I start with light, because light is what actually changed. Then texture, because touch is the sense we forget to design for. A heavier throw, a wool pillow, a rug with some weight to it.
Then scent and sound, which shape how a room feels far more than most of us realize.
None of it requires new furniture. It’s about layering in what the season is asking for.
What changes in your home when the light starts going? Share with me in the comments.

Most people get their homes ready for guests by doing a deep cleaning. That’s a great start, but the things that actually make someone settle in and relax aren’t as straightforward.
Here are three changes worth making before your first dinner of the season.
1. Dim the ceiling light or turn it off. Use lamps, sconces and even candles to warm up the room. Layered lighting is more intimate and comfortable.
2. Pull the seating closer together. Close enough that no one has to raise their voice to hear one another. Create seating clusters to encourage multiple conversations and connections.
3. Put something soft underfoot where people stand longest. In most homes that is the kitchen, and a washable rug is not only functional, but can be very stylish.
None of this requires a big investment or is too time-consuming.
If your rooms never quite settle no matter how you arrange them, I’d love to help you think it through.

One year ago this month, I launched edelmancoloranddesign.com.
In the year that followed, I enjoyed spending time inside other people’s homes. What I didn’t realize was how much I would enjoy spending time in rooms full of people.
I hosted four design workshops, where the questions women asked about their homes almost always turned out to be questions about their lives.
I joined B.I.G. Believe. Inspire. Grow. and The Co-Co | Co-Working Space two women’s networking groups where the conversation is honest and we learn from each other, along with the Morris County Chamber
Being featured in Greater Morristown City Lifestyle and Eastern Morris City Lifestyle gave me the chance to say broadly what I had mostly been saying to one client at a time.
What I did not expect was how much of building a practice looks like showing up and listening, being let into rooms that were not mine, and being trusted with how someone wants their home to feel before they have the words for it.
Thank you to everyone who came to a workshop, asked a question, or opened their door.
Year two starts now. Tell me what you would like to see more of.

To express my gratitude, I’m giving away a free Style Starter Design Consultation, which is a virtual consultation for one room in your home. The first person to comment ‘STYLE STARTER’ wins the free session 😊

I don’t begin with furniture or paint recommendations.

I begin with you.

How do you want to feel when you walk into this room?

Maybe you want a bedroom that feels calm and restorative. A kitchen that feels warm and welcoming. A library that invites you to settle in and stay awhile.

That feeling becomes the starting point for everything that follows—color, light, materials, furnishings, and the details that make the room uniquely yours.

These three spaces look completely different.

And that’s exactly the point.

Good design isn’t about having a signature look. It’s about creating a space that feels right for the person who lives there.
Follow along to see how those choices come together.

Your home should be a place of comfort.

I’m grateful to support an organization helping more of our neighbors experience that sense of security.

I’ve donated a gift basket to the nourish.NJ Share the Bounty Gala 2026 Silent Auction, featuring my Style Starter design services:

Virtual consultation for one room, complete with a personalized mood board and product recommendations, alongside thoughtful gifts from local businesses.

The silent auction is now live! If you’d like to bid on the basket or learn more about the event, message nourish.NJ for details.

Nourish.NJ’s work reaches beyond meals to address hunger and housing needs across Morris County. It’s a privilege to contribute in a small way to that mission.

The Share the Bounty Gala takes place on September 23 at Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park.

I hope to see you there. 🤍

What you see in the final photograph is the beautiful part, but so much of the design happens behind the scenes.

An outlet moved so the backsplash could flow uninterrupted.
A color tested in different light before making the final decision.

Tile sourced, compared, and reconsidered until the right one emerged.

These details may never be the first thing you notice.
But together, they create a room that feels considered, balanced, and effortless.

That’s one of my favorite parts of the design process: creating the details you may not consciously notice, but you’ll appreciate every time you use the space.

If a room in your home isn’t working the way you want it to, let’s talk. Link in bio.
