Market in the Park this weekend at Cathedral Square in downtown Mobile and Mobile Tea Garden WILL be there. Due to an oversight on my part we were not included in the list of vendors, but we got it all sorted and will be there bright and early Saturday morning. Betty and I hope to see you there.

Last weekend just might have been the final tea harvest for the year. I got a decent batch of leaf which I divided in two - half was devoted to one last batch of ‘Old School’ Oolong and the remainder was crafted into ‘Autumn Fire’ smoked black tea. Both of these have been popular at past farmer’s markets.
Speaking of markets - we are just two weeks away from our next Market in the Park in downtown Mobile. With that in mind and since it has been a very welcomed rainy day, I started packing some tea today. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Cathedral Square on Saturday October 17th.

Some people were grilling out on Monday - I was preparing for the chill ahead by processing a batch of our ‘Autumn Fire’ smoked black tea. 🍁🔥🫖

As the growing season begins to wind down I decided to do something I haven’t done before - a late season feeding. I started the year with a feeding plan that I outlined on this page many months ago which included an early spring; a late spring/early summer; and a potential late summer / early autumn feeding. This last feeding was to be contingent upon multiple factors: plant overall health, moisture, temperature and the time administered.
This harvest season has not been bad, but the early drought really impacted our first flush and we have never really caught up. However, on a brighter note, in recent weeks we have had satisfactory rain fall and the plants have been producing well. On the whole the garden is in good condition. With this in mind I decided last weekend to administer one last light feeding to the tea garden. We are late in the season but I believe if conditions hold for a bit longer I will be able to work in a few more harvests. Mobile’s first frost is still (historically) 10 weeks away. Last weekend most of the garden got a moderate dose of blood meal and the hardest working section also got a very light dose of Double Take 16-0-16. These are intended to give a good nitrogen boost to the garden for this home stretch.
Time will tell if this was a good move or not but I thought it was worth a try. I’ll let you know. 🤞

August is proving to be a descent harvest month. The plants have responded well to the leveling prune done in early July and has kept me busy in the garden with harvests in three of the last four Saturdays. I have to say, tea harvesting and processing in August is not for the faint of heart. The past two Saturdays have involved 10 hour outdoor days processing tea. But, I will not complain as I continue to stock tea for the fast approaching 6 month dormant offseason. I continue to make up ground from the slow start to the season brought on by a drought that plagued the area just as the plants awakened from dormancy.
A week ago I processed a nice batch of steamed green tea we call ‘Celadon Spring’ - ironic as it felt nothing like Spring 😅. And yesterday I was able to bring out the mechanical harvester and harvested over 7lbs of fresh leaf that I processed into our ‘Old-School Oolong’ tea. I’m enjoying a cup of it as I write this.
So, with any luck I will be able to squeeze in another couple of harvests to be well stocked prior to attending several Market in the Park events in October and November.

Early in July I decided to do a leveling prune of the entire garden in the hope that it would improve and simplify the remaining harvests of the season. I was trading several weeks of potential harvests in July for a hopeful vigorous and level harvesting ‘table’ for August and September. So far it’s looking like a good gamble.
When I pruned there was a small percentage of buds left untouched below the cut. These were the first to emerge (see photos) and this weekend they were the target of a mini harvest (1/2lb dried) converted into Old School (panfired) Oolong. This hand harvest and hand rolled batch left the tea garden well leveled with a sea of fresh new growth. The garden looks just as it did in the first week of April - a week or so before the first flush. I’m expecting to have a good, full harvest in about 10 or so days. After that we will just have to see. If a normal rain pattern persists and we don’t have any prolonged excessively hot periods there could still be a few more good harvests before things wind down for another harvest season. 🤞

It’s been a hot, busy few weeks… and now we wait. A few small batch harvests were worked in prior to doing a mid-season maintenance prune over the whole garden this past weekend. Saturday I did a small-batch hand picked harvest processed to make our ‘Yellow Lotus’ pan fired green tea. I have been doing a great deal of hand picking of late due to the uneven growth of the plants. This is one of the reasons for doing the maintenance pruning… to bring the plants back into uniformity.
However, this will mean it will be weeks before there will be enough growth to resume harvesting leaf.
Fingers and toes are crossed that we get back to some substantial rainfall so that the fertilizer application from two weeks ago can jumpstart the plants for good harvesting in August and September. 🤞🌦️🌱

This past weekend was a busy one for Mobile Tea Garden. We participated in the last Market in the Park in downtown Mobile on Saturday. It was very hot and humid but there was still a great turnout. I want to thank everyone that stopped by to see us and offer a special thanks to all that purchased tea to take home.
Market in the Park will return in the autumn and we are already signed up for 10/17, 11/7 & 11/14. We look forward to seeing all of our new friends then.
Sunday was busy in the tea garden itself. We are roughly at mid season and so my fertilization plan for the year called a light combination of fertilizers (organic and synthetic) to give the plants a boost during this intensely hot part of summer. We’re hoping for regular rain totals and hopefully no super hot (100F+) periods so that we can have good harvests through to late September to build up our stock. Fingers crossed - it’s all in Mother Nature’s hands.

I noticed that Market in the a Park listed Mobile Tea Garden as a participant vendor for tomorrow’s market. Actually, we will not be participating tomorrow as I will busy in the tea garden and work shop harvesting and processing tea. We will be back next week for the final market of the spring restocked with a variety of loose leaf tea. We hope to see you there.

4 hours of hand harvesting this morning. Now begins the processing to make more ‘Old School’ Oolong tea. Current temperature in the tea garden is 93F with a heat index of 107F. Fun times! 😂😅
