It's officially Spooky Season. Ever wonder why so many Southern porches have blue ceilings?

It’s more than just a pretty paint color. “Haint blue” is a centuries-old Southern tradition with roots in Gullah Geechee culture. The blue-green color was traditionally believed to protect a home from “haints,” or restless spirits, by resembling water or sky.

Today, haint blue is loved for a different reason—it makes a porch feel brighter, airier and unmistakably Southern.

On this Richmond home, the soft blue porch ceiling is the perfect complement to the historic architecture, crisp white trim and original character.

Sometimes the best paint colors come with a story.
