If you've lived in Midland long enough you know the weather is unpredictable and who knows if or when the first freeze might be. Is your sprinkler system ready? ❄️
Every winter we get calls about cracked backflow preventers and split pipes. Most of that damage takes about 10 minutes to prevent:
1️⃣ Insulate your backflow preventer. That’s the brass assembly above ground near your water line. It’s exposed, so it freezes first, and replacing it isn’t cheap.
2️⃣ Turn your controller to “off” or “rain” mode when lows drop below freezing. Watering on a freezing night means icy sidewalks and frozen plants.
3️⃣ Keep watering through winter, just less often. West Texas winters are dry. A deep soak once or twice a month on a warmer afternoon keeps roots healthy, and moist soil holds heat better than dry soil.
4️⃣ Find your main shut-off valve now, not at 2 a.m. during a freeze.

Should you overseed your lawn this fall? In Midland, most lawns are Bermuda, which goes dormant and brown in winter. If you want green grass all winter, overseeding with ryegrass in October does the job, but it needs regular watering. If you'd rather save water, let the Bermuda go dormant and focus on fall fertilizing and w**d control instead. Not sure which fits your yard? Ask us.

Thinking about a patio? Fall is one of the best times to build one in West Texas. Cooler weather makes installation easier, and it'll be ready when spring arrives. Pavers handle Permian Basin heat and soil movement better than poured concrete, which cracks over time. If a section ever settles, you can lift those pavers and reset them.

When's the best time to prune pecan trees in Midland? 🌳 Late winter, while the tree is dormant, usually January to February. Fall is the time to get ready: take out dead or hanging limbs before winter winds hit, give the tree a deep watering, and have it checked for weak branches. Pruning heavily in fall can push out new growth that the first freeze will damage.
