Inspired by the fluid lines of , we used sweeping, playful contours to shape this rooftop herb and vegetable garden.

The pathways sit below the raised planting beds, bringing the greenery closer to eye level and creating a fully immersive garden experience.

While visiting Palermo, a local suggested we visit Palazzo Butera a colossal 17th-century Baroque palazzo beautifully restored and reimagined as a contemporary art and cultural center.

Built in 1692 and restored by the Valsecchi family, the palazzo seamlessly blends contemporary design with its original Baroque details. Venetian architect Giovanni Cappelletti oversaw the meticulous restoration, creating a dialogue between old and new throughout.

Opened to the public in 2021, Palazzo Butera is a must-visit if you find yourself in Palermo.

To enhance the spatial transition, we introduced a wood portal to frame the guest suite foyer, transforming a simple passage into a more intentional architectural moment.

During our travels, we had the pleasure of experiencing a performance by the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana – The Brass Group inside the magnificent Teatro Massimo in Palermo .

Opened to the public in 1897 and designed by architects Giovan Battista Filippo Basile and his son Ernesto Basile, the theater is a monumental expression of Neoclassical and eclectic architecture, drawing heavily from ancient Greek and classical Sicilian influences.

The auditorium follows the traditional horseshoe configuration, designed for exceptional acoustics. One of its most remarkable features is the Ruota Simbolica (Symbolic Wheel), an extraordinary flower-shaped ceiling frescoed by Luigi Di Giovanni. Its individual petals can mechanically open upward, originally allowing warm air to escape and naturally ventilating the hall; a beautiful example of design where ornament and function become one.

Experiencing the opera house during a live performance made the architecture even more memorable. Next time, we’ll make sure it’s actually for an opera!

Studio Stories: Reflections

Tasked with seamlessly combining three apartments into one, we relied on the building’s original as-built drawings to guide the process. However, during demolition, we encountered several unexpected site conditions that weren’t reflected in the 25-year-old plans. One in particular was an H-shaped water stack, nearly four feet wide, sitting right in the middle of the future living area.

The client’s brief was to create a space where the interior architecture, materials, and furniture would serve as a quiet backdrop for their impressive art collection. With the water stack interrupting an area intended to remain completely open, we saw an opportunity to turn an architectural obstacle into a sculptural feature.

Inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s use of chrome-clad columns in the Barcelona Pavilion, which visually dissolve into their surroundings through reflection, we wrapped the structure in mirror-polished stainless steel.

Rather than concealing the obstruction, we embraced it. The reflective surface captures the surrounding interiors and sweeping views of Biscayne Bay, allowing the structure to visually recede while becoming a sculptural element in its own right.
