Brandywine Valley Garden Tour

Friday through Wednesday I’m leading a tour of gardens in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Even with both American and Southwest flights delayed on Friday we are able to squeeze in two visits. Woodlands Cemetery and Bartram’s Garden both in Philadelphia.

Woodland Cemetery is known for beautiful trees and shrubs and cradle grave. Cradle Graves also called a bedstead monument is a 19th-century Victorian burial marker designed to look like an infant's or adult's bed.

Bertram’s Garden is the oldest and one of the most historic surviving botanic gardens in the United States.

Last Saturday’s visit to Ladew Topiary Gardens on my quick trip to speak at region 3 Lilyhemmer daylily meeting in Pennsylvania. My visit there coincided with their annual carved pumpkin festival.

Mr. Ladew was a avid fox hunter and moved to this area for its beauty and plentiful supply of fox. Fox are still hunted today in this area but the dogs are called off before the fox are harmed.

Heartwood Nursery & Environmental Preserve

Second stop on Friday afternoon on my quick trip to speak at region 3 Lilyhemmer daylily meeting in York, PA.

Founded in 1987 as one of the first wholesale native plant nurseries, Heartwood Nursery is now among the largest wholesale and retail native plant nurseries in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Sue and her staff propagate and grow roughly 250 different holly species, selections and cultivars along with a large selection of native plants.

It was such a joy finally meeting Sue, the owner of Heartwood in person. I have followed the nursery’s Facebook and the Holly Society of America, page where she frequently makes holly post for years. I started ordering hollies from her a few years ago and on this trip purchased almost 30 to haul back in my luggage. After the nursery closed for the evening she took me around the beautiful property on the UTV and I ended the evening by sitting on the porch talking with her and her husband.

Putman Hill Nursery

First stop on Friday afternoon on my quick trip to speak at region 3 Lilyhemmer daylily meeting in York, PA.

It was such a pleasure meeting and talking with the owner Melanie of Putnam Hill Nursery. Her small perennial nursery and home is tucked in the beautiful countryside north of Baltimore Maryland in of Harford county. I went home with some cool plants.

Thanks to Sam Bahr and Janet Drapper for suggesting I visit Putman Hill.

It want be long until I have to pack up my Heartwood Nursery finds from yesterday for my 6:55AM flight from Lilyhemmer Daylily meetings in York, PA.

I bought these yesterday in route from Baltimore airport to York. I placed paper towels under them to wick out some of the moisture and elevated them in front of the HVAC system so they won’t be so heavy in my luggage.

Pumpkins, gourds and winter squash display at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville Tennessee. Displays can be viewed at Ellington daylight to dark through Thanksgiving. They are located at Moss, the Library, Holman and the Museum.

It’s been almost 10 years since I stoped growing and making cucurbit displays at my former job. It’s great to get my hands back into working with them.

Special thanks to my coworker John, friends Sandy and Linda from Bowling Green Kentucky and Beth from Nashville for helping me with the displays.
