Dreaming about growing your own pawpaws?

Pawpaws are native understory fruit trees that produce rich, custardy fruit. Young trees appreciate protection from intense afternoon sun, while established trees generally fruit better with a bit more light. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil that doesn't dry out completely.

For reliable fruiting, plant at least two, or more genetically different pawpaws for cross-pollination. Two seedlings grown from individual seeds, like our Bare Root Pawpaw Seedlings, can work well together, although to ensure fruiting we suggest planting 4 or more. Give them time to establish, too. Pawpaws aren't usually a quick harvest.

We have Bare Root Pawpaw Seedlings available for Spring 2027 preorder, including 6-16 inch seedlings starting at $8.95. See the selection online only at tfcnursery.com.

Persimmons come in more varieties than you might expect, and they're not all eaten the same way.

Our new guide, Choosing and Growing Persimmons, looks at what matters most when choosing a tree: cold hardiness, astringency, pollination, and seedlings versus grafted/named fruiting varieties.

We have 11 persimmon bare-root listings for spring 2027, including American seedlings, 'Prok', 'Meader', 'Early Golden', 'Giant Fuyu', 'Hachiya', 'Saijo', 'Chocolate', 'Coffee Cake', 'Nikita's Gift', and 'Rosseyanka'.

Read the growing guide and browse our persimmon trees at https://tfcnursery.com/blogs/resources/choosing-and-growing-persimmons

A native pillar of our eastern forests, the White Oak is prized for its beautiful spreading canopy, long life, strong timber, and the remarkable amount of wildlife it supports.

An oak is practically a whole community of its own. White Oak supports hundreds of species of moths and butterflies, whose caterpillars feed nesting birds. Its acorns feed deer, squirrels, turkeys, bears and plenty of other wildlife, while its branches, bark and fallen leaves provide shelter and habitat for countless more. Across the wider oak ecosystem, thousands of species depend on these trees in some way.

If you've got the room for a large shade tree, White Oak is a wonderful choice. Give it plenty of space, good drainage and a sunny spot, and it'll keep giving back to the landscape for generations.

White Oak is available in our Spring 2027 bare-root preorder selection. Reserve yours at tfcnursery.com.

We're clearing out remaining warm-season cover crop seed at 30% off, in store only. That includes sudangrass, sunflower seed and other warm-season options for next year's planting.

These aren't crops to sow in the cold soil of late October. They're for the warmer months, when a cover crop can fill an open bed, add biomass or help with summer soil management. If you're planning your 2027 garden, you can pick up seed now and store it in a cool, dry place until planting time.

Stop by the nursery to see what's left. This is an in-store offer only, while supplies last.

Whether you're protecting a little patch, a raised bed, or a whole field, cover cropping is one of the easiest ways to put your garden to bed through winter.

Just broadcast the seed, and water it in. That's really all it takes to get started.

Winter peas and clovers can add nitrogen to the soil as they grow, while rye and wheat hold soil in place through winter and give you plenty of material to cut down and use as mulch in spring. Plant a single crop or try one of our mixes to get several benefits in the same planting.

We've got fresh fall cover crop seed in stock, online and in store. Now's a good time to get it sown!

Today is the last day to save 30% on our remaining seed garlic. The sale ends tonight, October 25, at midnight, and variety choices are getting limited.

This is our favorite stretch of fall to plant. The full moon arrives tomorrow, October 26, and we follow the traditional practice of planting root crops as the moon wanes. We believe this is a good window for developing sturdy bulbs, and the cooling soil is another reason we like planting garlic later in the season. We've planted here as late as Thanksgiving with good results.

If garlic is still on your planting list, shop the remaining selection online or in store today. The 30% sale ends at midnight.

We love serviceberries! These native fruit-bearing trees and shrubs are some of our favorites for an edible landscape.

They bloom with clouds of white flowers in early spring, produce sweet, blueberry-like berries in early summer, and put on a beautiful show of fall color. The birds love them too, so you may have to plant a few!

We carry several kinds, including Downy and Allegheny serviceberries, Juneberry/Saskatoon, and Autumn Brilliance. Some are grown as single-stem small trees, while others have multiple stems and a more shrub-like shape. That gives you some great options for a small yard, an edible hedgerow, or a wildlife planting. Their mature size and fruiting habits vary, so we're happy to help you choose.

Our Spring 2027 bare-root serviceberries are available to preorder for shipping, and we also have potted serviceberries here at the nursery if you'd like to come pick one out and plant this fall. Come see what we've got!

10/23/2026

Our first fall live-plant shipping cutoff is this Sunday, October 25, for northern states and colder regions. We're planning two later regional dates:

November 15: Central states and Mid-Atlantic regions
December 6: Southern states and Gulf Coast regions

All dates are weather permitting. We monitor conditions at the nursery, along shipping routes and at destinations. If freezing weather or storms put plants at risk, we'll hold them until shipping is safe.

Live plant orders placed after a region's cutoff will be held for spring shipping. Seeds, garden supplies and other non-plant items will keep shipping weekly. You can find our plants and shipping information at tfcnursery.com.

A hedgerow can do quite a bit of work around a homestead. It can slow the wind, create privacy, feed birds and pollinators, and even provide fruit for your kitchen. The trick is choosing plants that suit your site and repeating them enough to make a cohesive planting.

Our guide, “A Homestead Hedgerow That Does More Than Mark a Boundary,” looks at how to plan one, choose a few reliable shrubs and trees, and use different heights to build a useful border. We’ll share the full article once it’s published, and our spring bare-root selection is already available for planning.
