Off with the old, on with the new.

The team had a big week in the field. They removed a large section of the existing roof, framed the new roofline for this primary suite addition, and had it sheathed and protected before the weekend. This is the stage when a home is most exposed to the elements, and with winter on the way, the team doesn't waste time getting things buttoned up.

As Careers in Construction Month continues, we're sharing stories about our team's path to the trades. Today, we hear from Lead Carpenter Jeff.

Jeff's path to carpentry was not a direct route. He worked as an industrial production manager before deciding he needed work that was more varied and creative. He got his start in construction working for a friend's remodeling company, where the owner and lead carpenter took the time to nurture his skills. Over the next 15 years and two companies, he refined his craft and grew his confidence as a leader.

When it was time for the next step, a former coworker pointed him to TDS. Jeff explains, "Yes, the work itself is similar, but the culture and values truly set it apart." He found the sense of belonging and shared purpose he hadn't realized was missing.

October is Careers in Construction Month, so we asked Carpenter Nathaniel how he got his start.

"I was living on an island. You could either be up at 3 am to fish, or you could build. I didn't want to wake up at that godforsaken hour, so I started building."

His first boss, Luther, taught him that every setback has a solution and that it's important to keep progressing despite the difficulties. Nathaniel's advice for anyone starting out is to take PPE and safety seriously from day one, because you only get one body. "Also have fun, listen to good music, and develop a good underhand toss."

Some of the most important and understated work on a project is site protection.

Hardboard on the stair treads. Floor coverings that stay down for the whole build. And for the grand piano, a custom foam box to keep it safe and still lets our client play during the build.

As our Project Developer, Jon keeps finding new ways to understand a house before the TDS build crew ever picks up a hammer.

Jon digs into the details early and he's comfortable with tech - Matterport scans, videoscopes to see into walls, whatever it takes to learn all about a house before we start the build. That groundwork means fewer surprises for our team and for our clients.

Jon finds pride in knowing he's made a contribution to improving the spaces and lives of the people we work for. Three years in, and that contribution keeps growing. We're glad he's on the team.

Two years with TDS Design Build!

Erin Lynett brought a background in space planning, cabinetry, and kitchen and bath design. Two years in, she's grown those skills and takes on whole house remodels with ease.

She asks the questions clients didn't know they needed answered, and isn't afraid to float the unconventional ideas if it moves the conversation forward.

Meet Ryan Buckel, Architectural Designer at TDS Design Build.

Ryan brings years of experience teaching architecture, engineering, and woodworking to each project at TDS. His guiding principle is that good design starts with understanding the home that is already there. Before making changes to a space, he looks at the whole picture: the house, the site, the neighborhood, and how it all works together. Ryan believes new work should add value while preserving the existing home's character.

When he's not designing, he's behind the camera at live music events or writing and producing his own music.

TDS Design Build is featured on the cover of the UW-Madison SBDC Fall 2026 Class Catalog.

Ben got his start at TDS in 2000 and worked his way up to owning the company. The SBDC was a key part of that journey, from writing a business plan to navigating the purchase process.

Today, Ben leads a team of designers and craftspeople helping Madison families stay in the neighborhoods they love. He wants to make sure education stays part of the TDS culture by introducing team members to Wisconsin SBDC at UW-Madison courses as they grow in their careers.
