My male cat passed away this morning..
So about a week ago, my cat was struggling to p*e, and didn’t really think anything of until the day after he wasn’t eating or drinking and was sleeping way too much. And that day we took him in. We were told he had a blockage. And was at the vet for a week. And we brought him home and he was really out of it, and he was p*eing but it was bloody, and he was drinking and eating some, Friday, he was still out of it, and always sleeping. Only drinking. We called and they told us to wait over the weekend and bring him in Monday. And today I woke up for work and I couldn’t find him. And I found him in the basement. And he passed away. He was only 3 years old. Really sucks. I loved him to death. I really feel like I could’ve done something. Just sucks.

What cats don’t get adopted?
I’m planning on going to the shelter to adopt a cat. I’ve been without for a year, but have otherwise lived with one most of my life. My previous friend was a senior black cat that had been returned to the shelter several times for “behavioral issues” and we had a great relationship - he would just get violent if you violated boundaries after he warned you, so he wasn’t good with kids, but fine was with me. Choosing him was easy, he screamed at me and demanded to be held the second I walked into the cat room.

I’d like to find a similar cat, one that is usually difficult to adopt. What cats usually struggle to get adopted?

Has anyone's cat ever randomly p**ped in the toilet?
EDIT AND ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS AT THE BOTTOM.

We are proud moms to a 5 lb, 1 year old murder machine.

Her litter box is in the bathroom next to the toilet and she often follows one of us in to... co-p**p. Which, whatever. If she wants to bond by p**ping sure, why not?

However, this morning it appears she has actually used the human toilet?

There was an unflushed tiny little cat p**py in the toilet, and there is absolutely no way it could have gotten there unless she... used the people toilet.

I've seen people train their cats to use the toilet but we haven't. Honestly, I've been keeping the toilet lid mostly down since we got her as a kitten because I was terrified she'd drown in it.

But the toilet seat was up and there was a tiny kitty turdlet.

Is this a thing cats do? Has anyone's cat ever randomly used the toilet?

Once while she was visiting our landlord he closed off the room with the litter box so she (in desperation) p**ped in his kitchen sink. But that's only because she couldn't get to the litter box! And that was weeks and weeks ago!

I'm just so confused and don't know what to do. Her litter box was scrubbed yesterday, maybe she's mad?

Idk. I've never had my own cat before, help!

EDIT, COMMENT POSTED FROM BELOW:

Omg like 10 minutes after I wrote that comment the toilet p**ping was confirmed!

My SO was in a meeting and Mittens bust in complaining so my SO followed her like we usually do when she's trying to tell us something.

She took my SO to the bathroom, jumped up on the toilet lid, and began her "mooooooooom, I neeed haaaaaaalp" voice. According to my SO she said, "Do you need me to lift this?" and once she did mittens perched on the toilet seat, did her business, my SO flushed, and Mittens ran off down the hall!

So she is 100% using the toilet. She must prefer it since her litter box is right there and rather than use the litter she went and got my SO out of a meeting.

Now do we keep the litterbox jic? We haven't seen her p*e in the toilet but even if we do should we keep the litter box anyways?

I'm going to have such a hard time remembering to put the lid back up, lmao.

Guilt over feeding my cats dry food and elitism in cat nutrition
Hi everyone. I have three cats and at the time of adopting them we could feed them all wet food no problem. We were doing totally fine financially. I was even considering making them a custom cooked food diet at one point. But then everything came crashing down. I got laid off my job due to new management and had to start working in restaurants again. It’ been a couple of years and we still haven’t quite gotten back to where we were.

The point of this all is that I watch a lot of cat advice videos online because I love my cats and want the best for them, and so I’ve landed on channels like Jackson Galaxy. I think that for the most part he’s an excellent source of knowledge on cats but when it comes to nutrition, he seems a bit extreme to me. We can only afford to feed our cats dry food, point blank period. The language he and others like him use makes me upset because it seems so elitist/classist. The message he gives is if you love your cats you would never feed them dry food and if you do you are abusing them and should be ashamed. He makes statements like saying that wet food is completely affordable and saying it isn’t is just an excuse. However, we have three very large cats. The food we used to buy was $0.88 per can and with a 9% sales tax that’s $0.95 per can. The back of the can says one serving per 3.5 lbs of body weight. Our cats are 13, 16, and 20 lbs (we are working on getting the third one’s weight down but the other two are just large by nature as we’ve learned). That would amount to 14 cans per day to feed all cats. That amounts to $399-$412.30 every month just to feed our cats. That doesn’t include dental treats/toothpaste, litter, pet insurance, vet visits, medications, or anything else that might come up. I know that those numbers sound insane for number of servings, and nobody I’ve ever talked to has followed that and given their cats like max 3 cans per day, usually 2, but that’s what the resources say to feed them. Based on what is written on the nutrition label, that is what it would cost.

We simply cannot afford that right now and I am so sick of people online saying that if you can’t afford your cat then you shouldn’t have one. If I’m doing the math wrong or if you guys have any advice on how to manage this better, please let me know. I know that feeding our cats dry food isn’t the best thing but I can’t seem to wrap my head around the portion recommendations and prices of wet food. I want to like channels like Jackson Galaxy but this one take of his just rubs me the wrong way every single time.

What do cats actually do on a daily basis??
My cat is 9 months old, He basically just sleeps more than half of the day, eat, sits with my mom while she’s cooking and play with the ball for like one hour then the cycle begins again. Is this normal?? And if it’s normal doesn’t that make a cat’s life kinda boring? He sometimes stares into nothingness which makes me think.. is he depressed?? Well what makes a cat depressed?

My cat demands that I watch him eat.
My cat is just over a year old, I've had him for for 7-8 months. He really, really wants me to watch him eat – I've got an automated feeder but he'll sit outside my door at 4am making until I go and watch him eating. When there is someone watching him eat, he purrs like a maniac while chowing down.

I went away for a week and had a cat sitter and friends visit him to pay him attention and give him treats, but he was off his food – I suspect because their visits didn't coincide with his feeding times, and there wasn't anyone to watch him eat.

What's going on? He was the runt of the litter, and there were a lot of cats in the house I got him from, so I wonder if he has some sort of food insecurity issue from being shoved aside?

My newly adopted cats have been hiding for at least 8 hours.
I adopted 2 kittens this morning, I was told they were a bit skittish because they were found somewhere on a business park, which I get.

And I've read from multiple sources that cats will need some time to adjust to their new home.

But they've been hiding behind my refrigerator for at least 8 hours.

I showed them where the litterbox was when I let them out of the carrier, and I've put out some food, water, and toys, and there's plenty of other more comfortable places away from me where they can hide.

Otherwise I've been trying to let them adjust at their own pace, trying not to bother them (but a man's gotta eat and they're behind my fridge)

Is this still normal adjustment period behaviour or should I try to coax them out of hiding?

UPDATE:

Someone suggested turning off the lights in room, which I did (I don't remember why I left them on).
And I heard them come out of hiding, they're now exploring the living room.
They're still scared of me so I'll leave them to it.
But it's progress nonetheless.

friendly reminder that de-clawing cats causes them severe physical and psychological damage, and is not only inhumane but will actually cause u more problems down the road
Both the cats I’ve had in my short life have never been declawed, although my mothers was (back in the 80s when this was standard practice). However, I see a lot of posts on here asking about “problem behaviours” and some people ask about declawing. I want to reiterate something my breeder told me when I got my cat 11 years ago (and she was very strict on this point, even though my parents would never have declawed her anyways, i’m not even sure that’s still legal in my country). Declawing a cat is literally an amputation of their toes and finger tips, and is excruciating for them. My moms cat was in severe pain for many weeks after she was forced to have him declawed (she was living at home at the time and again this was the 80s). It was literally a horrible and messy experience. It can also lead to arthritis and problems walking later in life. However what I only recently learned through some research, is that declawing also affects cats psychologically. Claws are one of their self defence tools, taking that away from them will likely make them more fearful, anxious (bed wetting), and less friendly...including make them more aggressive. And all for what? My experience with raising cats is that you cannot look at them like dogs, or like they are “trainable” that is the wrong mindset to adopt when dealing with a cat. You cannot train them not to scratch, if they are scratching furniture ect. then you have to redirect them, providing a variety of scratching posts, climbing posts ect. all go a long way to helping this. Or replace your expensive furniture with cheaper furniture for the time being...cats do grow out of behaviours as well and become somewhat sedentary for much of their later years. But brutalizing them by removing their claws is not the way. If you’re ugly rug is worth more to you than an animal that will love you unconditionally, then you probably shouldn’t be getting a cat or you should reconsider your values in life. Just a rant.

My cats keep announcing themselves - want to make sure I’m not missing something
I adopted two litter mate brothers and they have settled in wonderfully. Recently I’ve noticed that they announce themselves for everything by meowing. Entering a room? Meow. Jumping on the bed? Meow. Adjusting their weird sleeping position? Meow. Going to p**p? Meow. Coming back from p**ping? You’d better believe that’s a meow.

Are they just saying hi or something or am I missing anything? They’re in great health otherwise and their recent annual vet check up was clear. Thanks!

I thought my rescued cat was friendly, but it turned out that was only because she was sick and hungry. Wondering if I will ever have my friend back.
So I've never had a cat before, but about 4 months ago I was on a walk and a little female cat ran up to me and start rubbing on me, crying and followed me home. She was emaciated and dirty and super sweet. I started leaving out food for her and about 2 weeks after that decided to officially adopt her.

We would cuddle for hours every day and I felt like I'd found a best friend. It was wonderful. But clearly she was not very healthy as she was barely eating so I took her to the vet and she had a little bit of dental work done.

The first vet didn't seem to be that helpful so I eventually took her to a different one. This one seemed more serious and showed me that she had severe gum inflammation and he removed most of her teeth. About two weeks after that she still had gum redness so I took her in again to get a steroid shot.

And after that, she finally seemed to be eating and pain free. which is absolutely amazing, other than the fact that she has completely changed in her behavior towards me, and now that she's not hungry she really doesn't want much to do with me, only really acknowledges my existence when its feeding time then goes to do her own thing. She no longer wants to cuddle and cowers away if I try to pet her.

I'm going to keep caring for her, but ngl it's actually pretty painful and I feel deceived by the complete 180 even though I know she was just following instinct.

Is there any chance that in the future she will like me again?
