“We’ll do the lighting later.”

We hear it all the time, and a few months later we usually get the call.

Good lighting isn’t something you stick on. The cabinet has to be built to hold it, with the channel, the clearance, and the finished surfaces all planned in. Decide early and the light looks like it was always meant to be there. Decide late and it looks like what it is: an afterthought.

If lighting is even a maybe, bring it up on day one. It costs very little to plan for, and a lot to wish you had.

Let’s break down materials!

MDF, particle board core, and plywood each do something the others can’t.

MDF is perfectly smooth and stays dead flat, which makes it ideal for painted doors and crisp profiles. Particle board core is flat and stable, which makes it a great base for veneer. Plywood holds screws and handles moisture best, so it earns its place in the spots that take a beating.

Use any of them in the wrong spot and you’ll find out in a few years. Use each one where it’s strongest and the whole cabinet is better for it.

That’s the difference between buying cabinets and having someone build them who knows why.

Most people cross custom off the list before they ever ask what it costs.

That is the mistake. A big box cabinet is a fixed menu at a fixed price. Custom is a set of dials. Turn down the exterior, keep the bones, and the number lands a lot closer than you would think.

So the real question is not “can I afford custom.” It is “where do I want my money to go.”

Have you ever seen a storage system like this before?

LED lighting on every single shelf. Integrated finger pulls, so there is no hardware interrupting the face. Premium materials front to back, with interiors finished to the same standard as the outside. Soft close throughout. And the part nobody notices, which is the point: the HVAC supply is built right into the base of the unit.

That last one is the whole job in one detail. The room had to breathe, so the cabinetry absorbed the mechanical instead of fighting it.

Seven things you cannot order from your standard cabinet maker.

Lighting set into the cabinetry, so you see the glow and never the fixture. A paper towel nook built into the end of the island. A shallow tray riding above a deep drawer, so nothing gets lost at the bottom. Appliance panels cut from the same run as the cabinets, so a whole wall reads as one piece. Shelves that float wall to wall with no bracket in sight. Built-ins sized to the room instead of pushed up against it. And a stair screen that is not even cabinetry.

None of these have a model number. Every one of them exists because somebody said what they wanted out loud.
