A little glow-in-the-dark science tonight. Think back to fireflies over a summer lawn: what makes that tiny lantern light up? Pick A, B, C or D and watch the top countdown. The answer arrives at 12 seconds with a short explanation. What is your favorite memory of watching fireflies?

As the evening settles in, take a glance at the light around the porch and outbuildings. Use enough to see safely, keep the beam aimed where the task is, and turn unnecessary lights off when the work is finished. A shielded, downward-facing light can help keep the glow close to home instead of spilling across the whole yard. Small choices can leave a little more darkness for the night beyond the porch.

Which outdoor light could use a more thoughtful setting?

One small job before freezing weather: put the garden hose away properly. 🍂 Disconnect it from the outdoor faucet and remove the nozzle so water has a way out. Lift sections along the hose's length to drain the water, then make loose coils and store it in a sheltered spot. A hose left attached can keep water trapped at the faucet, even when the faucet is labeled frost-free. This is hose care, not a complete plumbing winterization plan; irrigation systems and exposed pipes may need their own steps.

Is your hose still hooked up, or has it made it back to the shed?

Evergreen doesn't mean every needle stays forever. 🌲

Many conifers shed some of their older needles in autumn while keeping newer growth green. A little yellowing inside a pine can be part of its normal cycle.

Before assuming something is wrong:
1. Look at where the change starts. Older inner foliage and new outer tips tell different stories.
2. Check the pattern across the whole tree. Species vary in how much they shed and when.
3. Look closely for spots, bands, damaged tips or dead branches.
4. Take both a whole-tree photo and clear close-ups if the change seems heavy, unusual or is spreading.

Browning new growth, branch death or major needle loss deserves investigation. Get a reliable identification of the problem before choosing a treatment. This is an observation guide, not a diagnosis for a struggling tree.

Have you noticed a fresh layer of pine needles this fall?

The barnyard trick-or-treat committee has arrived. 🫏🎃

That donkey is checking the bucket, and the pony is supervising from a comfortable distance. A pumpkin face on the pail doesn't make breakfast any less urgent! 😂

Which farm animal would make the most determined trick-or-treater?

Cock-a-Doodle Morning! 🐓🎃

He picked a Halloween costume that requires absolutely no acting. The hens dressed up for fun; the rooster showed up ready for another very loud shift. Extra credit for staying in character! 😂

What costume would fit your most dramatic animal?

A fox at dusk is not the whole story. Foxes often hunt at night, but seeing one in daylight is not unusual by itself. Give wildlife room, keep food and rubbish secured, and watch from a distance rather than offering a meal. Have you spotted a fox passing through your neighborhood?

Tonight’s small check is for the fully cured storage onions. Give the bulbs a gentle once-over and remove any that are soft, moldy, or rotting so they do not sit among the good keepers. Whole storage onions need a cool, dry spot with air moving around them, not a tightly closed plastic bag. A shallow open crate or breathable bag makes them easier to look over.

Do you keep your onions in a crate, a mesh bag, or a braid?

I’m sharing a closer look at these coneflowers. 🌸 Pink, coral and orange all together, with plenty of buds still waiting to open. A little garden color to enjoy.
