In this basement, the slab is uneven where it meets the footing around the perimeter, with high and low spots throughout. Our installer will gring the high spots flat, then we pour self-leveler over the whole floor.

Because it's a basement, a roll-on adhesive moisture barrier goes down next. The flooring sets right into it, which also keeps it from shifting under the heavy equipment in the home gym.

The floor you see is only as good as the prep you don't!

Planning to open up your kitchen? Ask about the walls first. One of the walls around this kitchen was helping hold up the roof. To take it out, we extended the stair wall about two feet to carry the load.

This wall does a lot of work.

Before the remodel, dry goods, small appliances and the holiday platters all lived in the basement because there was nowhere upstairs to put them. Now two floor-to-ceiling pantries handle the storage, with a built-in desk between them and floating shelves lit with LEDs.

We set a laser level to find the high and low points of the room, then lay everything out. Every door and drawer gets labeled, and anything that will sit loose for a while gets wrapped.

This stand mixer used to live in the basement. Now it lives in the kitchen island.

A mixer lift was on their wish list from the very first meeting. The shelf swings up to counter height, locks in place and folds back down into the cabinet when they're done. No more carrying 20-plus pounds up the stairs every time someone wants cookies.
