If you are redesigning a classroom, ask the teachers what is not working.

They know where children tend to gather. They know which materials are difficult to access. They know where transitions get complicated and which storage areas become frustrating by the end of the day.

Not every childcare center starts with a perfect floorplan.

You may have an awkward corner, an unusually shaped room, limited wall space, or areas that do not seem to have an obvious purpose.

That does not mean the space cannot work. Sometimes it takes looking at the room differently and finding a solution around the existing conditions instead of trying to force a standard layout into it.

You do not have to do everything at once.

When a classroom budget is limited, start with the things that affect daily use the most. Think about safety, storage, traffic flow, appropriately sized furniture, and the areas children use most often.

Decorative upgrades can come later. A well-planned room should work well before it looks finished.

That kind of prioritization can make a big difference when opening, remodeling, or expanding a center.

Yesterday, Educare was featured in a Crain’s Business Chicago article about proposed cuts to the Head Start Program Performance Standards. Annaliese Newmeyer, one of our education coordinators, joined Start Early Illinois’ Executive Director Nila Diab and Yvette Sanchez Fuentes, Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Research, to share what this could mean for families.

The proposed changes would significantly impact teacher-child ratios in classrooms, services for children with disabilities, dual-language learning and much more. Opening a daycare involves a long list of decisions, and furniture is only one part of it.

Before ordering products, it helps to think through how children and teachers will move through the building, where different activities will happen, how storage will work, and how each room supports the program.

The earlier those decisions are considered together, the fewer surprises you may run into later.
